Qoologic - Browser Hijacked

Hi, my browser has been hijacked by Qoologic. I have done the Qoofix thing and it restarted my computer (several times). When i finally was able to start up the computer (windows xp) Qoofix says it removed Qoologic but popups appeared when i a few seconds later, and every now and then i get a more popups and prompt to install some program. The popups are all on Internet Explorer, not Mozilla.

    Hi renu_ridat,

    Qoologic has been successfully defeated. :D However, you have a VX2 infection which is causing the popups.


    Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

    Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    Thanks for the quick reply! I ran option 1 and then closed l2mfix.bat once the report was done. Here is the log::

    Also, i'm not sure if this is related but:
    The popups reappear whenever i REFRESH my desktop. Also, i cannot move any of the icons on the desktop around, i drag them into a folder on the desktop unless its to an open folder. I cannot move files to the desktop either. but i can rename them.

    Sorry for the delay...

    Close any browsers and programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

    From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter. It will process then start. Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. Press any key to reboot. After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
    If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder.

    Also, I would like to see another log from HijackThis.
    • Run Hijackthis.
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
    • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
    • Press the Save list button. It will open a Notepad file.
    • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

    Thanks for the reply, i did as you told. There are still popus when my user loaded. My icons were moving fine when i logged on, but not anymore though.

    Whoa, I should have seen this first. Your running an unpatched version of XP, which means where both wasting our time since you are likely to get infected everytime.

    The first thing you need to do is download Microsoft Service Pack 1a to your computer.

    After that, you need to download an Anti-Virus & Firewall. Some Free one's are listed below.

    Zone Alarm << I recommend this

    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\amd6.sys was in use and it had to cancel. I don't know what that is so what should i do now?

    Not sure what that is either!

    Try Windows Update. Start > All Programs > Windows Update.

    Do NOT install SP2 just yet as your computer is infected.

    Is there anyway to get rid of it without updating to Sp1? Because my computer is shared and so updating it without everyone elses consideration may be a bad idea? Is it possible to just get rid of the thingy? Is is perhaps a key or a file i can delete? or do i get ads because of some back door?

    i think it only is on my user, and that i get popups for sure when i refresh

    We can try and get your computer cleaned, yes. However, by updating to SP1 you would be doing everyone who uses the computer a favour. Like I said, while your computer is unpatched you will always get infected because your not fully protected.

    Is there a reason why you can't or won't get SP1? Is this a legit copy of Windows?

    Please let me know.

    sorry for not replying but the reason im not updating so quickly is because i think my older brother would have done so already if he wanted to (he's like the boss of the computer) and so i want to get rid of the adware without having to change the computer too much.

    my computer seems fine, i scanned it with ad-aware and spybot and got rid of anything it found. Popups still appear every now and then. I've installed ZOne Alarm and it is constantly blocking inbound attempts to the computer, but it has not stopped the popups. I've also installed AVG antivirus protection.

    The only problem i notice is popups which only come from Internet Explorer. I've tried to stop it from accesing the internet using Zone Alarm, but popups still occur, only the webpages do not load.

    hi id just like to say thanks for all your help in getting rid of the qoologic stuff. I still get popups and occasionally i can't move my desktop icons around. But, i've gotten a hosts file from the internet which seems to block pretty much all the popups. The only thing is that explorer.exe is using a lot of memory (20-30k or more) So once again, thanks for your help. If i have anymore problems i'll start a new topic, etc. thanks

    I think i actually fixed it this time. Turns out there was a webpage loading on my desktop. I went to
    ->Right Click >> Properties >> Desktop (Tab) >> Customize Desktop >> Web (Tab)
    and there were two webpages loaded on my desktop. I've disabled and deleted both and my desktop seems great. Hope this will help anyone with the same problem.
