About to take Sledge to Router and Modem!

Okay, I have a Motorola SB4200 surf board modem, and a linksys WRT54G, that has been reflashed with DDWRT.

Here is my problem. With the modem plugged into the router, and my computer plugged into the router, I can barely get a connection, but here is the reason, the router is not getting any DHCP info, it wont get an ip, a gateway, not even DNS info.

If I run a straight line from the modem to my computer, and change my tcp/ip properties to obtain ip/dns automatically, everything is working fine.

When I have the router plugged in, I have it set so that my computer has a static ip on the network, but anyway, I am about to try it with the router, and obtaining the stuff automatically.

I am starting to think that the router is cooked, Which I am hoping it is not, because I have been having problems with the modem for about a month now, having to reset it occasionally, but in the last week, the connection speed has almost come to a halt, and in a lot of occasions, I can not even get a connection.

Is there a reason that the router will not get its DHCP information automatically? If I try and do DHCP release, and DHCP renew, nothing happens, it still shows 0's for all of it.

Can the computer see the router when hooked directly to it? Let the computer take whatever IP address the router cares to give it (the same way you have the computer set up when going directly to the modem).

On my Linksys, it's simplest to choose "Gateway" under Advanced>>Dynamic Routing, not "Router" mode.

fixing to try that. I have one of the aftermarket firmwares running, so I cant exactly call and complain to linksys...

but the router wasnt even getting DHCP info from the wan, cause it gave me all null values. Im fixing to plug the router back in, reset it all, and see where I get. I called sudden link, and they reset the modem, and I had them reprovision it, so the problem is ruled out on their side as I am getting a good conection when hooked directly from my computer to the modem.

What port on the router are you using to connect the modem to? What kind of cable are you using, regular or crossover?

Sounds like the provider wants to provide the DHCP address only to the MAC address of the PC. Try to clone the PC's mac address (should be an option somewhere in the WRT54G) and see if it works.

Also, when you successfully connect by plugging the PC directly into the modem, use ipconfig /release before trying with the router again.

I got it to work, I restarted everything about twice, turned everything off, booted the modem, the router, and then my computers, all seems to be working now, except I lost all of my port forwarding. back up to 3.1Megabits (400KB/s), not as fast as some providers, but I am only using a DOCSIS 1 modem, so I think my speeds might increase if I bought a new modem.
