internet connection sharing problems

edited August 2006 in Science & Tech
Hi,
im pretty much newbie at home networking with xp but i know a thing or two, heres the scenario:

i have 2 pcs both with xp pro installed, they seem to be networked almost perfectly. i can browse and exchange files over the network on each of the pcs, the problem is that i cant seem to share my 512kb adsl connection.

the connection works on the host pc as you might expect, however the second pc refuses to acknowledge any internet connection. i have tried to share the connection manually in the advanced tab of the connection properties alas to no avail.

i'd be greatly appreciative if anyone could help me out.
(sorry if you've seen this posted a million times in the past, i couldnt find any relative posts to my situation)

edit: there is no hub involved, just a plain old crossover cable

edit 2: for no particular reason that im aware of, the 2nd pc can now view the shared connection but it doesnt appear to work at all...

edit 3: it now works and i dont understand why :S fluke to b honest.

Is the 2nd PC set up to use DHCP? It sounds like the 2nd PC doesn't have a default gateway, meaning it doesn't know where to send data beyond your network.

Yes, check your gateway settings. As you're not using a hub I'm assuming its a USB modem?

It is a USB modem and I tried to set the default gateway as the main computer's IP, is that right or do i need to set it as something else? I don't know if this is relevant but iI don't have a static IP with my ISP.

The problem was resolved by having the 2nd computer automatically detect IP settings but I don't see why it didnt work at first. I appreciate your efforts to the problem despite my flukish success, this way I'll have a few things up my sleeve for if it plays up again :)

In this case, yes, the default gateway is the 1st PC (with the modem). It's tricky however with ICS. When you enable ICS the NIC gets an IP 192.168.0.1 (default). It enables DHCP on that interface. The gateway for the other PCs will be 192.168.0.1, not an IP that may already be configured on the 1st PC (such as the IP from your ISP).

A simple answer to why it didn't work is a configuration setting was incorrect. DHCP is the easiest why to let it configure itself correctly. Just leave it on DHCP unless there is a major reason not to (which is unlikely).
