Recovering files through dos

Hey everybody.
So I hear that recovering files through dos is easy to do right?
Somebody came to me today asking how to recover a book they wrote.
I never messed with recovering files, and I knew that the sm crew would know what to do
I did not get too many details about the book (file type, how it got deleted, etc), but if you need those details I'll try to get them.
I didn't even get details about the os (it was an elevator encounter, so I didn't have much time to get info)
This isn't an extreme emergency, but I wasn't sure where else to post this.
Thanks for the help.
