POST does "Detecting IDE Drives" then says system boot failure.

Hi,

Have a high spec system and recently came across a pretty boggling problem. Upon boot (POST) it will sometimes recognise my optical drives (sometimes not) and does not recognise my HDD's. It will stay at "Detecting IDE Drives" for approx 15secs then brings up the msg of boot disk failure. Have checked in the BIOS to see if i could do it manually but no luck as they do not show up in there either. Been told it could be a MOBO issue but dont wanna risk spending out on a replacement when im not certain its that. I unplugged all cables and also did a CMOS reset to see if that would resolve but no luck, so reset the RAM settings back to what they were but no it also shows my optical drives as ATA 33 & ATA 66.. cant remember them being like that before. Any advice or experience in this problem would be great, wanna get my rig back up and running as soon as poss really, having to work and crappy laptop atm :/
