Artifacts appearing

Now my trusty Radeon 9700 has begun showing artifacts.

I am using Rage3D Tweak for my OC'ing.

Yesterday it was running at 300/300 it worked fine.

Today I tried upping the ram to 306, it appeared fine.

Then I upped it to 310 and then everything went downhill.

I began artifacting badly in 3Dmark, I cancelled the test right away.
Then I reset the clock to 300 that worked fine yesterday.
But it is artifacting at that frequency as well.

Then I reset the whole thing to default frequency.
Everything worked fine.

How can I get back up to 300/300?
It is no fun running at default.
You should be able to test a frequency and then back of a little if it does not work, right?
It appears that I can only run at default speed. :bawling:
BTW I have not tested all speeds between default and 300/300.
I have to reset everytime the artifacts appear.

would running the 3.8 cats only affect him if he modded his card to a 9800 though? but then it could also be affecting 9700s who knows.

    I am running Cat 3.8.
But does it affect my 9700 non pro?

try reverting back to 3.7 to check. the 3.8s raise the gpu temp like 15 degrees, that could be it.

Couldn't I try raising the ram clock?
And leave the GPU clock at default.

video RAM overclocks are generally very limited. For example, my 9700Pro, which defaults @ 310 mem, only overclocks to like 325 anything more and it's artifact/lockup city. It's similar on most video cards, at least the ATI's (I didnt say ALL)

I have noticed that as well keto.
But as far as I know the Cat 3.8 raises the core temp.
It does not affect the video ram.
The odd thing here is that the artifacts was still there even after I lowered the speed.
Of course 300/300 might be the limit for my video ram I do not know.
I did not like being pushed further, that is for sure.

My Radeon 9700 RAM will run at 315, but after a while the screen will just go insane with mad flying triangles and a scene that could compete for a Beatles music video.......

Speed of the ram. 3.3ns ram clocks to a max of 303mhz and 3ns clocks to 333mhz. I think the artifacts are cause of the heat.

I will try to describe the artifacts.
It is like vertical bars from top to bottom.
They are made of many small horizontal bars.
There are approx. 4 in total on the screen.
The picture gets all wierd if you drag a window across the screen.

If you were able to overclock your 9700 higher with the Cat 3.7's than the Cat 3.8's, then the problem of core overheating is not just isolated to the Radeon 9800 series of cards.

Want to perform a little experiment? Install the Cat 3.7's and see how far you can overclock before the artifacts set in. If it's higher than with the 3.8's, I'd recommend you keep the 3.7's installed and that everyone do the same if you have a Radeon 9700 series card.

If the artifacts set in at the same clock speeds with the Cat 3.7's, than it sounds like there is a cooling issue with your card, either the core, RAM or both.

What cooling do you have installed on that card? Any ramsinks?

It is standard cooling and no ramsinks

I gotta try that experiment too. I can hit 375 and 380 on the core but it locks up after a few loops of 3dmark. I also need better cooling. The stock one is rather weak.
