RPC server unavailable when trying to install programs

edited April 2008 in Science & Tech
This morning when I turned on my computer I got an error that said it couldn't start Windows because the Windows\System32\Config\System file was corrupted. So I found a thread on this site that helped me copy the file from my Repair folder and I was able to start Windows normally.

But now when I try to install programs, I get an error saying RPC server not available. Sometimes after getting this error my computer will restart. I have found other articles online that talk about this same error, but most of them have to do with installing printers.

I have gone into Services, and both RPC and RPC locator are started and set to start automatically. I think it may be a problem with InstallShield installs. I haven't tried an install yet that didn't use InstallShield.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this?

Thanks,
Rob

reinstall windows when you get an error like that it is best just to reinstall. Ask Armo he knows too! Crappy windows server class.

Do you know how to perform a Windows repair install? We can rebuild Windows right around all your files, settings and programs. :)

I used the Repair Console this morning that got me into DOS and that is how I copied System file. Is it similiar to that?

It's after that screen. When it gets to the point where it's scans your disk for previous installations of windows, it'll find one and allow you to hit "R."

    Just go into Services ( Start > RUn > services.msc )

    Find DHCP Client

    Start or Restart the Service.

That won't do anything for this problem.

When you replace the system file, you usually have to reinstall a bunch of drivers as well, not to mention some system updates usually get reverted. Go into your device manager and make sure you don't have any errors there. Then do a windows update to make sure that everything is patched correctly.
