Spyware problem

Hi everyone,
Recently I have contracted a spyware/adware problem. I ran both Spybot S&D and Adaware and they removed most of the problems, however some pop-ups still remain.

If at all possible, could someone please help me out by looking over my hjt log? For a time my IE browser was hijacked, but spybot appeared to fix it. I just want to make sure its all gone.

Crunchie

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Restart your computer in normal mode.
Please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.

The reason I have marked some as suspicious is because shortly after contracting this virus, my bluetooth adapter began trying to connect to my phone. I turned it off and found some things in Network places that I deleted which seemed to stop the problem.

The problem is still hanging around like a bad smell, I followed all instructions from safe mode and ran an adaware and spybot s&d scan from safe mode. It picked up a lot of stuff. I have screenshotted two errors, and also would like to inform you that ishost.exe tried to connect but sygate firewall stopped it.
(This was happening before too, but I never got a chance to screenshot the problems for you)

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please download Ewido Anti-Malware it is a free version of the program.

1. Install Ewido Anti-Malware
2. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
   • Install background guard
   • Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
   • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
   • Then click on Start Update.
6. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
   (the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")

Close Ewido for now.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

1) Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser : Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser: Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.


2) Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it does force a restart, please reboot into Safe Mode again, in order to complete the following step. If it does not reboot, please remain in Safe Mode until further notice.

3) Launch Ewido from your Desktop :

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
• Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Close Ewido Anti-Malware.

4) Reboot your computer normally.

If SmitfraudFix did not force a reboot, then you should now see a text file appear onscreen with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

5) Post the content of rapport.txt, the Ewido report and a new HijackThis! log in your next reply.

Hey,

I tried to follow your instructions and came across two problems before I started. First of all, when I installed Ewido there was no option called "Additional Options", so I had no choice but to let the problems install themselves.

Second problem was strange. I could not get into safe mode, my account would not load and the administrator account had suddenly passworded itself. After looking in the User Accounts on my computer I discovered that there is an account called "ASP Machine A..." (I can't read the rest but I assume that it says Administrator). Is this part of the virus? How can I get past it?

Also, I just thought that I would mention that I disabled System Restore. I hadn't done this before and I realised that this may have been part of the problem.

Disabling system restore can be a bad thing. I work on the theory that a bad restore point is better than no restore point, which is what you now have .
Try the following instead as that version of Ewido is now out of date. Uninstall Ewido first.

Please download and install ewido anti-spyware tool

• Close all other Applications Select language click Ok
• Click I Agree
• Click next
• Click Install
• Click Finish
• Wait and Ewido will open to the main screen automatically.
• Wait again a few minutes and Ewido Should Auto update itself. If it doesn't click update at top of screen.
• This is very important to get updates
• When updating has finished. Close Ewido.

If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

• Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear use arrow up to highlight
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

  You MUST manage to get into Safe Mode for the fix to work.

Make sure to close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!

• Open Ewido
• Click on scanner top of Ewido sceen
• Click on Settings
• Under How to Act click on Recommended Action choose Quarantine
• Under How to scan all boxes should be selected
• Under Possibly unwanted software all boxes should be selected
• On right side under Reports: click on Automatically generate report after every scan.
• Under What to scan select scan every file
• Click On scan Tab
• Click on Complete system scan
• Let the program scan the machine It can take awhile give it time.
• When scan has finished At bottom of screen click Apply all Actions
• Click Save report
• Click Save Report as (Save as window's screen should pop up.)
• Click desktop
• Click Save
• Exit ewido

Reboot back to normal mode

See if you can get into safe mode through msconfig. Close all open programs.
Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
The computer restarts in Safe mode.
Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

I got the latest version of Ewido: ewido-setup_4.0.0.172c.exe - The site you gave me for the new version installed the exact same version.

As for my safe mode, I overcame the problem by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete, then running new process - explorer.exe. After I clicked Yes (on the menu where it asks if you want to use safe mode or system restore, I was given about five seconds of desktop time in which I ran the smitfraud fix, which after had completed, restored the desktop back to normal. However, when I rebooted (as per instructions) it went back to the problem stage.

I did the same thing again, ran both fixes that you gave me, smitfraud fix and the other, and then ewido (which was updated). I ran it in a complete scan and deleted all things marked as viruses. I also went psycho in my Hijack This log and deleted any entry that didn't appear to be linked to a particular program. So far, I have reset back to normal mode and nothing seems to be popping up or erroring so far.

I will post a new HJT log and perhaps we can work from there. I will also update you if any errors return.

EDIT: Literally the second I posted that an error came back. I will follow your instructions above before I return. Any ideas about the safe-mode problem? It is very strange, the computer does not load to the desktop at all, and for whatever reason my Admin account is still passworded. I am considering formatting just to solve this problem the easy way, but I hope it doesn't come to that!

A couple of things you can try are 1/. Go to Start|Run and type in sfc /scannow with the space between the sfc and the switch. You will need your OS CD. This will check for and replace any missing or corrupt files.
2/. A system repair which will not require a reformat.
