OS doesn't recognize second SATA channel

I have an older machine running Ubuntu's Dapper Drake LAMP server. I've got an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe mobo with SiI 3112a SATA controller. The OS is on a 100GB WD PATA hard drive. I have a 320GB WD SATA hard drive and 500GB Maxtor SATA hard drive. Both show up correctly during POST, however once the OS is running I cannot find the hard drive on the second channel. I have switched the two SATA hard drives and can see each one, in turn. But I cannot get both drives to come up at the same time. I've exhaustively searched Ubuntu and other linux forums without luck. I came upon this site during a search for the 3112 and A7N8X bios updates. I'm hoping someone here can help. Thanks.
