retrieve data from laptop

my computer won't boot for some reason (says it there's an error with the operating system...). i have a hp laptop. how can i (assuming i can) retrieve my data from my hard drive? help please!

    What is the error? We may be able to fix it without jumping through data-recovery hoops.

    I don't know what the problem is. It just says that there's an error loading the operating system or that the operating system cannot be found

    Write down the exact error message and post it here. You should also go in the BIOS and see if the hard drive is being detected properly.

    As Thrax said, there a number of things to try before jumping into all-out data recovery. :)
