ICS between 2000 host & xp client

edited August 2006 in Science & Tech
Hi there,
I have been trying to setup ics from my win 2000 host to my win xp client, but my LAN on the xp says "limited or no connectivity". I can share files, but I can't access the internet from the client computer (xp). HELP!

I have googled to no avail.

Unfortunately I cannot use the xp as the host :(

Any feedback or help would be appreciated
Thanks
Daina

Is DHCP enabled on the XP machine?

Just to make sure... if the computers are connected directly together you're using a crossover cable, right? If they're connected to a hub/switch then straight through cables are fine.

Make sure both "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are selected in the TCP/IP Properties. If connections between IPs (like local file sharing) work but named connections do not, DNS is misconfigured. That may be what's wrong.

Do you know how to check the XP for proper IP settings? With the default ICS settings (XP's anyways) the settings should look something like:

    IP: 192.168.0.x
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.0.1
    DNS: 192.168.0.1

yes I am using a cat 5e crossover cable.

These are the xp's ip settings:
    IP address: 169.254.156.127
    subnet: (same as yours)
    default gateway: (nothing)
    DNS server: (nothing)

I think you're right - the DNS seems to show nada/nothing, so this may be the problem - how do i fix it?

I have set everything to obtain automatically.

    I really appreciate your help.

IP address: 169.254.156.127 is your problem. Limited or no connectivity usually means your machine is not picking up an IP address.

If you are using DHCP do an ipconfig release and renew from the command prompt or just use static IPs, whatever is easiest for you.

I hate to sound dumb (although I probably do) but how do you go about the last thing you said re: release and renew?

    appreciate the help heaps!

Open up a command prompt, fastest way is by typing 'cmd' in the run box and hitting enter.

Once the box opens up type 'ipconfig /release' and wait. You should get some confirmation in the window as to whats happening and when its done. After that type 'ipconfig /renew' and providing DHCP is running you should pick up an IP.

If you get errors about not being able to release or renew it probably means DHCP is not running.

when i do that i get this:
"The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissable for this operation"

which to me is simply alien - i have no idea what that means

It simply means that none of the adapters are set to use DHCP. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > (right click) Your adapter name here and go to "Properties". Follow the pictures below afer. :)

Once you complete that, exit out of the windows and try the 'ipconfig /release', 'ipconfig /renew'. If you still can not get a valid IP (192.168.1.x most likely) then we would look at the 2000 machine's ICS setup.

i got an ip as described above, so i will check to make sure the connection works. As it stands, I have just connected the xp computer directly to the internet in the interrum...i will check to see if the connection works now.
Thanks for all your help, you're a star!

i just checked the connection and it's still not working. this may be due to the fact that I have a network connection for the internet setup on this computer now though.... would that be the case?

Sorry a reply took so long I never got an email saying you had replied. :o

My suggestion would be to set up everything exactly as it should be:

    Internet <-> NIC 1 | Win2000 | NIC 2 (ICS) <-> (X-over cable) <-> WinXP (with DHCP and automatic DNS enabled)

Make sure DHCP and automatic DNS is set to on on both PCs and ALL network interface cards (NICs). Shut down all PCs. Power up Win2000 and make sure the Internet works. Enable ICS on the other network card. Make sure Win2000 and WinXP are connected with a crossover cable. Power up the WinXP machine. Wait a few minutes at the desktop then find out its IP. If it's NOT 192.168.0.x (x=something) then I believe ICS is not setting up correctly. If ICS gives any errors/warnings when you try to set it up, copy the exact wording and post it here.

All your settings should look something like below but obviously changed to your specific numbers.

    Win2000:
    NIC 1 (Internet; probably DHCP)
IP Address: (IP from your ISP)
Subnet Mask: (subnet from your ISP)
DNS1: (DNS 1 from your ISP)
DNS2: (DNS 2 from your ISP)

NIC 2 (ICS; when you enable ICS it should automatically set these settings)
    IP Address: 192.168.0.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
DNS1: (DNS 1 from your ISP)
DNS2: (DNS 2 from your ISP)

    WinXP:
    NIC 1 (Using DHCP)
    IP Address: 192.168.0.x
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    DNS1: 192.168.0.1

When all else failed, I disabled everything and set it all back up again, and now ICS is working again.
Thanks for all your trouble, it was greatly appreciated!
    Thanks, faerygrl
