can't access files

My PC motherboard has burn't out. I have taken out the hard drive and put it into an enclosure to make a serparate drive. I cannot access any of the files in my user id. I did have a password on this drive to prevent the kids messing with my music, photos etc. Playing around with a few things, can't remember what I can now access my user id, but cannot access my documents within the user id. I get the message e:\document and settings\OWNER\my documents is not accessible. Access is denied. Has anyone got any suggestions. I really do not want to lose all my photographs or music.

In windows explorer, right click the OWNER folder and hit "Properties." Go to the security tab and hit "Advanced." Now, drag your mouse and make sure all the accounts you see in the list are highlighted. Check "Replace permission entries..." and hit apply, wait until it's done. Then go to the owner tab, and click YOUR windows log in that list, and check the "Replace" box. Hit apply, and wait until it's done.
You've successfully added yourself as an owner and viewer of those files and folders. Enjoy.
when I right click I only have three choices, general, sharing and customizing. Don't think I am doing it right!
I have replaced my computer with a laptop and I tried turning off the c drive and running it from the e drive which is my old c drive but still loaded the windows on the laptop not the drive in the enclosure.
Easy fix for this! Go to tools -> folder options -> view -> scroll to the bottom of the window -> Uncheck "Simple file sharing."
You should get the menus I spoke of.
Tried that but could not find the simple file sharing.
i tried the above but when i try to replace the permissions i get access denied as well....
man i hope all that stuff isnt lost
Hi when i right click I only get 3 option I then tried the tools but cannot find the box simple file sharing to uncheck? PLEASE HELP I GOT ALL MY PHOTOS OF THE KIDS AND MY MUSIC ON THERE.....................
I'm running XP Home. Would that option only be available in XP Pro?
//EDIT:
Good deductions lady and gent! It's true, XP Home only supports simple file sharing.. Sort of! You can get around it as seen here!
The Security tab is available in Safe Mode.
Hi Thrax,
I tried in safe mode and got to the security tab, clicked on advanced and then I got this message:-
"you do not have permission to view or edit the current permission setting for "folder", but you can take ownership or change auditing settings."
Any clues? Is it because I have a copy of window on the E:\drive this was originally the C:\ drive on my old computer that fried. Is there a way I can by pass the C:\drive and boot up my laptop from the E:\ drive?
I REALLY DO APPRECIATE ALL OF YOUR TIME AND HELP. THANKS
Just do the steps I outlined in reverse order. Do this:
Then do this:
Don't boot the backup drive with Windows; all windows installations are custom-tailored to the computer they came from! Data and settings can be overwritten and deleted if you boot a copy of Windows installed on a hard drive not originally used in the PC you're booting it with.
It worked whilst in safe mode whilst being administrator but as soon as I rebooted it said access denied, when you boot up xp home edition in safe mode there is an administrator key as well as my user id, does this make a difference? Any more thoughts? You superstar. lol
Hi it's worked i'm in. The only problem I have now is that it says that the files are either in use or are corrupt but I noticed in the corner of the explorer that it says that the file is compressed. Is that why I can't look at my work?
I have taken the screen shot how do I get it in here, I have tried to upload but won't have it, I have saved it as a word processing document. I have also tried to do a simple cut and paste but that won't work either.
I tried to add it as an attachment but it says it is too big to upload. Any suggestions?
2. Resize the window so everything you need to show us is on the screen, but the window size is relatively small.
3. Hold SHIFT and hit the print screen button.
4. Download a copy of IRFanview and install it.
5. Run the program and hit CTRL + V once you're inside the application.
6. Go to FILE >> SAVE AS
7. Set the "save as type" to JPG and set the quality to 100%.
8. Now just give the file a name and save it to wherever you'd like.
9. Back on Short-Media, when you go to make a new reply to this thread, go to "Manage attachments" and hit "Browse" on one of the boxes on the new window.
10. Find the JPG file you just saved in the "Browse" window, and then just double click on it. Hit upload.
11. Once your file is listed as an attachment, you can close the window and finish your reply to this thread if you've anything to say in addition to posting the picture.
And you're done! You've just taken a screenshot of a window, saved it, and uploaded it as an attachment to S-M.
Oh believe me I will always have questions, I got a thread up and running at the moment regarding outlook express that won't let me delete any messages. I did recover everything I needed just have a problem with a couple of protected wma files won't let me move them over to i tunes. Any ideas?
