can't access files

My PC motherboard has burn't out. I have taken out the hard drive and put it into an enclosure to make a serparate drive. I cannot access any of the files in my user id. I did have a password on this drive to prevent the kids messing with my music, photos etc. Playing around with a few things, can't remember what I can now access my user id, but cannot access my documents within the user id. I get the message e:\document and settings\OWNER\my documents is not accessible. Access is denied. Has anyone got any suggestions. I really do not want to lose all my photographs or music.

perhaps...take it out of the encloure...set it as master in ur running comp...boot it up in safe mode so it doesnt take too long to load all the different drivers...and take the protection off...

In windows explorer, right click the OWNER folder and hit "Properties." Go to the security tab and hit "Advanced." Now, drag your mouse and make sure all the accounts you see in the list are highlighted. Check "Replace permission entries..." and hit apply, wait until it's done. Then go to the owner tab, and click YOUR windows log in that list, and check the "Replace" box. Hit apply, and wait until it's done.

You've successfully added yourself as an owner and viewer of those files and folders. :) Enjoy.

I have replaced my computer with a laptop and I tried turning off the c drive and running it from the e drive which is my old c drive but still loaded the windows on the laptop not the drive in the enclosure.

Easy fix for this! :) Go to tools -> folder options -> view -> scroll to the bottom of the window -> Uncheck "Simple file sharing."

You should get the menus I spoke of.

ok nvm i fixed it, found some instructions on some different forums that were slightly different than the above, i'll post them in case anybody else will ever need them
To take ownership of a folder:
Right-click the folder you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
In the Name list, click your user name, Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the
Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, click to select the Replace
owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
Click OK. The following message appears, where folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of:
You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions
with permissions granting you Full Control?

All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.

    Click Yes.
Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.

How to Take Ownership of a File
NOTE: You must be logged on to the computer using an account that has administrative privileges.

To take ownership of a file, follow these steps:
Right-click the file you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
In the Name list click Administrator, or click the Administrators group, and then click OK.

The Administrator or Administrators group now owns the file. To change the permissions on the files and folders under
this folder, continue to step 5.
    Click Add.
In the Enter the object names to select (examples) list, type the user or group account to which you want to give access
to the file. For example, Administrator.
    Click OK.
In the Group or user names list, click the account that you want (for example, Administrator), and then click to select
the check boxes of the permissions that you want to assign that user. For example, Full Control [Allow]. When you are
    finished assigning permissions, click OK.

Thrax, just to back up Kellie, I don't have that option either.

I'm running XP Home. Would that option only be available in XP Pro?

It might definitely be an XP Pro thing. I'll have to investigate that.

    //EDIT:

Good deductions lady and gent! It's true, XP Home only supports simple file sharing.. Sort of! You can get around it as seen here!

    Hi Thrax,

I tried in safe mode and got to the security tab, clicked on advanced and then I got this message:-

"you do not have permission to view or edit the current permission setting for "folder", but you can take ownership or change auditing settings."

Any clues? Is it because I have a copy of window on the E:\drive this was originally the C:\ drive on my old computer that fried. Is there a way I can by pass the C:\drive and boot up my laptop from the E:\ drive?

I REALLY DO APPRECIATE ALL OF YOUR TIME AND HELP. THANKS

I've definitely got an answer for you!

Just do the steps I outlined in reverse order. Do this:
Go to the owner tab, and click YOUR windows login in that list, and check the "Replace" box. Hit apply, and wait until it's done.

    Then do this:
Go to the security tab and hit "Advanced." Now, drag your mouse and make sure all the accounts you see in the list are highlighted. Check "Replace permission entries..." and hit apply, wait until it's done

Don't boot the backup drive with Windows; all windows installations are custom-tailored to the computer they came from! Data and settings can be overwritten and deleted if you boot a copy of Windows installed on a hard drive not originally used in the PC you're booting it with.

It worked whilst in safe mode whilst being administrator but as soon as I rebooted it said access denied, when you boot up xp home edition in safe mode there is an administrator key as well as my user id, does this make a difference? Any more thoughts? You superstar. lol

I think you just have to make sure that YOUR login name that you use for Windows is selected as the "Owner" of the file. Or instead of your Windows login name, you can use "Everyone" for both the owner and the access permissions. That will allow any account to take a peek.

Hi it's worked i'm in. The only problem I have now is that it says that the files are either in use or are corrupt but I noticed in the corner of the explorer that it says that the file is compressed. Is that why I can't look at my work?

I have taken the screen shot how do I get it in here, I have tried to upload but won't have it, I have saved it as a word processing document. I have also tried to do a simple cut and paste but that won't work either.

I tried to add it as an attachment but it says it is too big to upload. Any suggestions?

    1. Click on the Windows Explorer window to make it the active window.

    2. Resize the window so everything you need to show us is on the screen, but the window size is relatively small.

    3. Hold SHIFT and hit the print screen button.

    4. Download a copy of IRFanview and install it.

    5. Run the program and hit CTRL + V once you're inside the application.

    6. Go to FILE >> SAVE AS

    7. Set the "save as type" to JPG and set the quality to 100%.

    8. Now just give the file a name and save it to wherever you'd like.

    9. Back on Short-Media, when you go to make a new reply to this thread, go to "Manage attachments" and hit "Browse" on one of the boxes on the new window.

    10. Find the JPG file you just saved in the "Browse" window, and then just double click on it. Hit upload.

    11. Once your file is listed as an attachment, you can close the window and finish your reply to this thread if you've anything to say in addition to posting the picture.

And you're done! :) You've just taken a screenshot of a window, saved it, and uploaded it as an attachment to S-M.

Protected WMAs off of a CD? Hrm. Do you use MSN, AIM, ICQ or any other communication utility? I'd like to take a look at the file, I don't mean to question you, but it's very rare that a CD would produce protected WMAs.
