autochk not found - skipping autochk

edited August 2006 in Hardware
Hi, hope someone can help with this.

Originally had the problem outlined in this thread http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24057 (windows\system32\config\system missing). Tried the suggestion of 'FIXMBR' but thats led to a new problem.

Now Get as far as the Windows XP (Home) splash screen then the message -

'autochk not found - skipping autochk' - then enters an endless loop.

Have tried CHKDSK /R but same message.

Hope someone can help - thanks in advance

    Have tried this -

http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=313 (fix xp in 8 comands)

Got as far as entering identifier and load option, got this message -

'Error: Failed to add the selected boot entry from the boot list'

Tried again, got the message -

'The system cannot find the file or directory specified'

at the step 'attrib -h-r-s boot.ini' (assume because I deleted boot.ini the previous try).

Now when I boot up get the message -

    Invalid boot.ini file
    Booting from c:\windows\

How do I fix this? Please help before I try anything else...

Really grateful for any advice you can offer

    Fixed it

The partition was hidden, fixed it with PTedit, still got the 'Invalid boot.ini file' message though, but at least I can get to my files now

Use Notepad to open your boot.ini file (it is in the root of the drive where Windows is installed), then see if you can spot any obvious errors. If you're unsure about what to do you should post a copy here before editing anything - a wrong move and you'll be facing a Repair Install.
