Buying a new router

The semester has almost started and I'm looking for a new wireless router for my apartment. I've owned only one in my life, a BEFW11S4, which is still kicking here at home for nearly 5 years now.

What is the best price for performance model of wireless router out at the moment? Wireless B or G, Linksys or Netgear (although I'd prefer Linksys as it's what I'm used to,) doesn't matter to me. As long as I have the ability to make it more secure than the WEP I have now I'll be happy.

Thanks for the help, as always.

I had a feeling that would be the model that would be suggested. Thanks for driving the point home.

Next question would be what exactly both HyperWRT or DDWRT add as far as the performance of the router goes, or if they're even necessary in the first place. I discovered both in a discussion on these boards a little bit ago, but never really figured out what their use / advantages would be. Would anyone care to elaborate?

    You can't mod it.

Gotcha, ...so then what does the modding allow me to do that the normal firmware doesn't?

Its a crippled os on crippled hardware and is a step backwards in both proformence and reliability.

This review explains it quite well.
