I am a major online FPS shooter freak, and Painkiller doesn't have much happening online...BUT the single-player is the most intense game I have ever played. Awesome graphics, nifty monsters, bonkers bosses, and insidious weapons. The only reason I can't give it 10/10 in all categories is the lack of people playing online and the fact that I had a glitch whereby the computer wouldn't allow me to finish the game, so I had to cheat to get to the final boss. One major plus is that I have an old system and just a plain ole ATI 9200, and the graphics are magazine-quality.
honorable mentions:
AVP- this game is the only game ever that actually SCARED me- one of the aliens dropped out of a vent right in front of me. This game is so close to the tension of the movie it deserves the best honorable mention.
Blood- first FPS that made me spellbound by the whole experience- real fun
Quake II- this game is still by far the darkest, moodiest game ever. Just something about it that creeped me out, while still being fun.
Soldier of Fortune- good fun.
Thief- when I needed some downtime from fragging, this game was entertaining.
HL I
DOD- awesome WW II game.
BF1942- anyone ever flyby the enemy base at ground level and bean some soldiers with your plane??? LOL

BF2 is a far more favorite over CSS as it revolves around moderen warfare. If it was WW2 or back in the era it would have to go to COD2...
Other games I love but won't rate on a scale...
Oblivion
BFME2
AOE & AOM era...
CnC era...
WC era...
SC
and many others
