How to enable TCP/IP on a laptop?

Someone at work gave me their Dell Inspiron 5100 to fix. They have a lot of stuff on it, so I can't just wipe it out and reload everything.

I'm trying to get the internet connection (ethernet) working, but it says the TCP/IP is not enabled when I go to Network Connections, and right click and select "Repair" on the LAN connections. Windows can't repair it.

So what can I do to figure out how to enable it?

This computer is running on XP Pro.

Go into the properties and put a check in the Internet Protocol TCP/IP section, if it has a check, uncheck it, apply the setting, then recheck it and apply...

    That should do the trick.

Tried that (in Network Connections), and it didn't help. The boxes were already checked, so I went through the process of unchecking and rechecking them.

The laptop kept wanting to use the dial up default connection. So I deleted that connection, and it just didn't work at all for getting on the internet after that.

I'll try booting it off my Knoppix 3.6 CD and see if I can get on the internet like that. Device Manager says the LAN/ Network card is working fine.

Did you try creating a new connection from scratch?
It may need a repair installation.

    Follow these instructions.

Additionally, once you've completed those steps, please issue "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" at the C:\ prompt under START >> RUN >> CMD

That might work, but there's one little problem.

I click on Start, then Run, then type in regedit (or cmd for other things I was trying), and the little black screen will pop open for a split second and then disappear.

I think he's got a good virus on this thing, one that Ad-Aware SE doesn't even know about!

Well, I say F#$K it, the owner said not to worry about it so I'll give it back tomorrow.

I think a good reformat / reload of XP Home is what it needs.

Sounds like a virus/spyware to me too.

Adaware is crap; use something else.
