I run a windows xp home on a dell dim 8400 with 512 mb ram. i have recently encountered a problem of sudden shut down(if i may call it so) which last for about 45 mins to 1hr before i can restart. while down the computer never turns fully off as the power light on the tower and monitor constantly blinks yellow.what could be the cause of this

With unexplained shut-downs, the first thing to try is to clean the dust out of the inside of the case.

Most seemingly random shut down problems are caused by heat, which builds due to dust.

While you have it open, check to make sure that all of the fans are running properly, and that the heatsink is correctly installed.

CB is right about the heat being a huge issue. If that does not turn out to be the culprit, I would suspect the power supply. Dell is notorious for putting underpowered power supplies in their machines, and yours may be on the verge of failure.
