video/audio converter apps

edited September 2006 in Science & Tech
Hi!
I've just joined the forums. looks like a nice setup here.

anyway, I've been looking for a fairly good freeware video converter that I can use to convert my avi movie files from my camera into wmv so I can stream them on my website, only problem is most video converters that I've tried won't do it. I think it is because they need the DivX codec to play.

Also, I need a converter that will convert my DRM protected files to mp3. I've do have the lisences in media player, but I'm usually copying and moving my files to and from my several computers and am always running into the problem of them not playing. also, they don't play on my mp3 player.

any suggestions appreciated.

Question one: Fool around with a copy of SUPER

Question two: While possible, it's illegal, and we can't support that kind of stuff here.

    thanks for your help!

in regard to question two, I thought that it was legal to convert them if I did have the lisences, is this not true?

It's not true. If you own the licenses to the item, you own the license to the item in the format the item arrived in. Removing encryption or converting the file to any other format not intended or implicitly allowed by the file's authors or copyright holders is a federal felony under the DMCA.

Hey, I'm glad SUPER worked! It's been getting rave reviews for simple and effective media conversion. I've started recommending it to people based off this thread. :) Stop by Short-Media if you've any more questions, and hey, welcome to the best place on the wide, wibbly web.

I can concur after trying canopus procoder, tmpeg etc that super is by far one of the simpliest and quickest converters- canopus is pretty good too- but it is not freeware.

dbPowerAmp is a nice modular converter as well (or at least was back in my Windows days) and integrates nicely into the shell as well to make it easy to use on the fly. But yes, welcome to the 'now' world where DRM is forced on you if you want to use any mainstream places to buy music and they tell you what you can play it on and what with. If you want to use something better I recomment www.allofmp3.com (don't be fooled by the name, their service is online encoding so you can get the music in pretty much any format, even lossless for anything remotely popular, which is the reason I use it).

Just don't think the files you are downloading are legal. Not that its going to get closed down any time soon with it being based in Russia.

Do you have anything to back up that it isn't legal other than one sceptical post someone made a little while ago?

That's the same story regurgitated 4 times in slightly different wording.

Meh, point me to a service that provides lossless downloads then.

They're called CDs. You can buy them in stores and over the Internet.
