I just downloaded VMWare Player for XP, it was free.... hoping I could install Windows 98 on my system for a couple old games that do not work with compadibility modes. How do I install Windows 98 at this point? It asks for a VMWare file when I start it up.

I don't really have an answer, sir, but have you tried DOSBox? Works wonders for old games. Since 98 was essentially DOS, you might give it a go.

The game doesn't support DOS, but I'll give it a shotl

I believe VMWare Player only plays VMs created using the Workstation/Server.

    http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
VMware Player runs any virtual machine created by VMware Workstation, GSX Server or ESX Server. VMware Player also supports Microsoft virtual machines and Symantec LiveState Recovery disk formats.
You will have to find someone with a Win98 VM already made (with your product key of course). Get the files (a VM file and a virtual disk are needed I believe) and you could play it on your box.

Download the VMWare server, install and don't worry about whether IIS is installed or not, follow the instructions for creating a new virtual machine, pop your windows 98 disk in there and start the virtual machine. It will start the installation process like it was booting el torito for real. You can load from an iso image as well if you have one. I used nlite to edit the install disk with the locale settings, silly parameters and the license code for an unattended installation, then saved to iso. I am constantly reloading windows for testing purposes here at work. That, of course, was a brief rundown. Let me know if you need specifics. :)

I can generate VMWare compatible files if you need blank ones. Bonus being that as they are zero'd files they will ZIP to pretty much nothing.
