65nm Chips On Track For AMD

AMD says they will deliver 65nm parts on time, on power, and in quantity.

Although it was reported a while ago that AMD was having trouble reaching the speeds it wanted, at the voltages it wanted on the upcoming 65nm process, the situation is nowhere near as dire as originally indicated.

The first generation of 65nm parts are set for 1.35v, so if they had to go up to 1.4, it would not be a notable problem. A new version, due for release early next year will dramatically drop voltage and wattage consumed, leading to quad core parts that are on track for the speeds and power AMD promised.

It seems like AMD is in much better shape than the rumors suggest.

    Heh, 1.35v is basically the same voltage they needed for 90nm procs, at least the later generations. Sounds to me like they are still working their way through a thermal barrier. With the smaller core of the 65nm parts, heat density/mm² will go up quite a lot and I don't think the IHS will help that out much either.
