computer slow please help

Hi… I’m not sure if I’m posting the thread on the right place and sorry if I'm wrong.. I have a question about my computer. Lately It’s really really slow :( … Now even when I’m writing in Microsoft Word sometimes it gets block for some second … It takes long time to turn on, to shut down or to open a new program…. I run Kaspersky antivirus and there are no any viruses… I don’t get why is my pc so slow….Can you please help me? Thanks a lot in advance..

    It would really help if you gave some specifications, of your computer, like processor, amount of RAM, how much hard disk space is left free on C: drive and which flavour of Windows are you running?

    On the C. there are 55.2 GB still to use

    Running with 256Mb of RAM will be a bit laggy, as the computer gets older and extra software uses up resources.

    My advice would be to purchase some more RAM.

    That's probably not it. I have computers that, after Windows XP is booted, run Office and other such programs capably on 128mb of RAM.

    First, welcome to Short-Media, Hristy. Let me point you in the direction of a resource that should help uncover a problem I think your PC may have. Go HERE and follow the provided instructions to the letter. The #1 cause of a PC that has inexplicably slowed down, to a great degree, is in fact Spyware. It's a really common problem.

    Slightly off topic, but have you ever noticed, the less RAM someone has, the more crap they seem to have load on startup? heh. :rolleyes2

    The problem I see here is that you have TWO Anti-Virus programs (Avast and Kaspersky IS), and with only 256MB of RAM there is no surprise why your cmputer is running slow. Having Two or more AV programs is never a good idea, since they both can conflict causing all sorts of problems.

    You should uninstall either Avast or Kaspersky IS - your choice!

    Regarding needing a Firewall, if you keep Kaspersky, you do not a Firewall since that has a Firewall included. However, if you decide to keep Avast, then you would need a Firewall.

    So, uninstall one of the AV's and decide if you need a Firewall or not.

    Post an Uninstall list from HijackThis please...
    • Run Hijackthis.
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
    • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
    • Press the Save list button. It will open a Notepad file.
    • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
    • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

    Have you seen any improvement by removing Avast?

    You should update Java!

    Update Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove the following...
      • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
      • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

    Let us know if there is any improvement.

    One thing I missed...You should uninstall the following from Add/Remove programs.

    UControl Scan and Remove

    It is not a trusted program.
