wireless network problem

Hi all,
I just got back from a client and was unable to help him -

"Quick update - another friend has a network of a Dell PC and 3 Laptops - laptops are wireless through D-link router - All access the net ok but cant access each other through a home network? So i figure its the same problem - any help would be appreciated"

He has a Dell Desktop running xp Home
Vaio Laptop running XP Pro
ADSL modem router direct cable connect to Dell and wireless connection to Laptop - Both can connect to Internet
3 printers set up to Dell.

He wants to set up a network so that the Laptop can access the Printers on the Dell

I could not get the Laptop or Dell to recognise each other

I could ping the Dell FROM the Laptop but the Dell lost all packets when pinging the LAptop

They are on the same workgroup

I presume it is because they are going thru the router that it is not straight forward?

What should I have tried? What did I do wrong?

cheers
Siggy

IS there a way to share the printer via a wireless switch or something? eg keep the current router and wireless setup, but connect a switch or some other hardware to the router that will allow the laptop to access the printer via WiFi???

    thanks

are you running microsoft printer and file sharing?
If you are activate the printer or folders to share by right clicking on printer icon and select share. ( I do believe that it is off by default ), if you are running sp2 i think the firewall is also blocking but is opened when you do the above.
DO NOT share C: drive on any system when connected to wireless, designate a single folder to be shared just for that purpose.
I have two desktops (wired) and two laptops and a desktop (wireless) all running xp or Vista rc-1 that see each other and the single printer attached to a single system. I only need it on and not logged in to use the printer from any other system.

Try disabling DHCP in the 3Com and see if that helps. Both the ADSL modem (which in many cases is a router as well) and the 3Com might be using DHCP and that usually gives a lot of issues. Can you telnet to the Modem?
