XP Doesn't allow SATA2 choice?

edited September 2006 in Hardware
Hey guys, I have a nforce4 ultra motherboard - clearly states on the box that it supports SATA2, and I also have a 160GB SATA2 drive to go with it. However, if I go to properties of IDE/ATAPI controllers in the device manager, it only allows a choice of "Serial ATA Generation 1 - 1.5G" or "PIO". Is there some trick that's required in order to have windows use SATA2?

Maybe you need to install the MB drivers (or chipset drivers) in order to allow windows to correctly identify your HD.

What brand and model# is the hard drive?

Many SATA2 hard drives come jumpered to SATA1 mode. This is because they would work at all if connected to an SATA1-only motherboard, likely leading to a lot of warranty returns for perfectly good drives. Check the drive itself and see if there is a jumper you can use to enable SATA2. (Shut the computer down first!) :)
