Renaming Batches of Files

Hey all- I am sure its a task you have wanted to do (and hopefully have done in the past!)...
A batch of files- say pictures from the same place or something- basically rename them filename001, 002 003 etc whilst preserving the extension......
I am sure there must be a few real simple freeware devices to do this- anyone care to enllghten me please?!
