Trojan Removed - Now I Have Locked Files and Need an LSP Check

Hello All!

1. I recently removed a trojan from my computer and was concerned about LSP (Winsock) changes (created backdoors, etc.) as a result of the trojan, if I'm describing this correctly.

I ran the usual virus and anti-spyware stuff (Kaspersy online, AdAware, WisockXPfix) and after running SpybotSD Winsock LSP tool, received the following info.

If anyone could be so kind as to check this out and tell me if all looks normal -

2. Also, from Kaspersky the report returned all clean but now I have a bunch of locked files which I also feel is from the trojan. I was wondering if it's ok to delete these and/or if there's a way unlock them.

Here's the Kaspersky report:

Hi Lou. Most of these files are logs and data files that would be safe to delete, and the Winsock files look OK, however before you do that could you please post a Hijack This log into your next reply so I can have a look?

If you don't have a copy please download Hijack This from here.

Unzip the file to your desktop. Open Hijack This and ask the program to do a scan and save a logfile. The log will open in Notepad. Copy and paste the entire contents of the log into your reply.

Hello Skywalker!! You can call me Lou. Thanks for helping me out with my situation. It's really appreciated.

Anyhow, here's the latest scoop - it seems that my spyware or trojan is more deeply rooted that it appeared originally. I've turned off my system restore before running any and all the above listed progs that you suggested (of which I have most, except Windows Defender (I'm running a non-regged version - sshhh!), Bit Defender, and CW Shredder). I do have CCleaner though in place of CWShredder, AVG, SpyBot SD, SpyWareblaster, Process Explorer, Ewido, AdAware and File Checker v1.5 (but could also use any suggestions as to crucial files to watch, if you can get around to it). I've also tried the BFU along with Ewido suggestion located here just for S's & G's but not everything on this link:

    http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48224&highlight=win32+trojan

It's didn't seem to uproot the problem either!

I've run some online scans and these above progs and no matter what, the bugs keep re-installing themselves and I can't seem to root them out. I could possibly not be using all the above defenses to their full potential, as I'm not completely sure of ALL their functions but again, I'm willing to learn anything you would be so kind as to suggest.

Kaspersky seems to be the one that returns the most hits, so I'll post that log again here too also. I think I noticed some different locked files from the last time, since the Trojan or whatever seems to have come back.

Here we go to do battle Master, against these Sith:

No popups, just mainly very slow, buggy operation.

Also, I'm reasonably sure in one or more instances of a scan I saw the "BargainBuddy" listed and also some form of a keylogger.

Here's the Trend Micro Scan with the keylogger results:

    untitled.jpg

(further down in the image here, there is also a detected vulnerability that has come up twice now in previous scans and I've already installed the MS Update it recommends both times - once I run throught the install, it says basically it's already installed. I don't know if this has anything to do with the whole issue or not?)

Yes Lou I'm sorry. I got tied up with some other things. I'll post back to you later tonight with my thoughts on this.

I hate to ask this Lou but could you please post another Hijack This log except this time run a new one and when the log opens in Notepad click the "format" tab and then select "word wrap". I'm trying to research this and the log posted above is hard to read because of the spaces. Sorry, but it makes it more difficult to research any suspicious entries.

Well Lou this log looks fine. Nothing malicious in there. Please follow the instructions below to run and post a different type of log:

    Can you do this please:

Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log, please post the information back in this thread.
If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

    Post the log when finished.

Hi Lou. Yes Silent Runners is an excellent tool. It's one of those last resort tools that we use when we think something is hiding and Hijack This can't show it. I don't see anything that stands out immediately but let me print the log and give it a careful look. I'll be back with you later.

Well, unfortunately this log looks good. It shows your LSP stack to be fine and the infection warnings it returned are normal for those locations. I think we need to get back to the grass roots here. You are having no pop-ups, but slow browsing, correct? Also you are receiving a warning from Trend Micro about a key logger, correct?

I'm just trying to hash out the major complaints. Trend Micro's heuristics may be giving a false positive on the keylogger. Keyloggers normally show up well in Hijack This logs, and if not there, definitely in Silent Runners because they have to run all the time. I hesitate to tell you to download more anti-malware programs because sometimes too much of a good thing is bad. Some programs will clash with each other and cause problems and you already have many security programs installed. With all that said though could you do one more thing for me:

I would like to see another log from HijackThis.
    • Run Hijackthis.
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
    • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
    • Press the Save list button. It will open a Notepad file.
    • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
    • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

I have to say Lou. I'm stumped:(

I don't see reason active or passive in any of your logs that would be causing the problems you seem to be having. Would you like me to forward your concerns to someone with more experience than me? I know the perfect person if you're interested. Let me know.
    :)
  • edited September 2006
Ok, Skywalker but one question before you go. Would it be ok to delete all the files that are locked (described in the Kaspersky scan) that I originally asked about deleting?
  • skywalker45skywalker45 Bloomington, IN. USA
    edited September 2006
Yes it would be fine. Most are logs and old index.dat files that are perfectly safe to delete. Do you still want me to refer you to a more experienced moderator?
  • edited September 2006
Well, Skywalker, Thank you for your time and effort. I appreciate the help you've given me so far and if you need to pass it on, that's ok. That Silent Runners is really informative and I appreciate you turning me on to it also.

    Thanks again,

    Lou

You're welcome lou. I will pass this post to someone else to look at in case I've missed something. 4 eyes are sometimes better than 2. I'll let you know what I find out.

OK. If you don't mind let's backtrack a little. In your first post you said you deleted a trojan. Do you remember what the file was (name)? Do you remember the location of the file?

I'm going to ask you to download and run another proram but before I do I would like to ask another question. You said you have no pop-ups, but your internet is slow and the system is buggy. Could you describe the bugginess? Do you have programs opening by themselves? Unexplained windows opening, etc?

    Please follow the below instructions:
    • Download this file - combofix.exe
    • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a log. Post that log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Also please download CCleaner from here.

Install that program but do not run it yet. I want to look at the log from the combo fix first.
    :)

Well, to be as exact as I remember, I didn't delete any files myself as far as the virus/trojan/whatever itself. I had Trend Micro remove any infections that were found and that was about it as far as the infection itself.

The files I did delete myself were the ones that were locked (found in Kaspersy) that I could actually gain access to, again all of which I don't recall.

The exact "bugginess" that I had was my mouse "staggering" and not moving smoothly, and when I would open "my computer" or any other files and click on them, the computer would run slowly and hesitate to open them and then the desktop would "blink" before they would open.

Mainly everything runs slowly including my internet connection. Accessing files took way longer than normal, like the computer was searching to find them.

That's about the best I can describe. I hope it helps!

As far as the combofix, I downloaded it and tried to run it, but it wouldn't run. It did seem like it was about to and it briefly opened my cmd prompt and produced two progs on the desktop where I dl'ed it to - nrights.exe and handle.exe - and then it didn't run any further and they disappeared. So, I don't have any log to post.

OK. That log looks quite different than the first one. References to Purity Scan and other adware show in it, as well as the Oiuninstaller which is the uninstaller for Purity Scan.

Could you please install CCleaner that I asked you to download. On the left side of the screen click the Windows tab and check every box in the pane below. Then click the applications tab. Again check every box in the pane below. Note that some boxes may be grayed out. That's OK, don't worry about them. Next click the button that says analyze. It may take a few minutes but after the program scans it will display a list of files in the right hand pane. After it does that click run cleaner. Please do not use the issues feature of this program.

CCleaner is like a janitor for your PC. It will round up any and all temp files as well as other files and delete them. I'm hoping it will help to clean up the files you say you can't delete from the Kaspersky scans. Once you do this run another Kaspersky and post the log here along with a fresh Hijack This log.

    Skywalker,

Same stuff. The oiinstaller (if I recall the name correctly) was something I had downloaded from another post in the forum as a solution for someone else's spyware problem. I was initially thought that that uninstaller would help remove the problem I had, along with BFU that was posted there. Those were just the signatures for removing that particular problem, which didn't work for me and I've removed them prior to this Kaspersk scan I'm posting here.

I still have the same files locked and they keep re-installing themselves (since I deleted them in safe mode, as described in the last post).

Here's the latest scan, again with the same stuff:

P.S. I've also had ccleaner and run it (with all options checked) before and again, before this latest Kaspersky scan and it won't remove those files either. I've tried CleanUp also (http://mysite.verizon.net/pgerhart/index.htm) - no luck there either.

    Hey Skywalker,

So, I'm here at the point where I would just like to get rid of these files that are left. It seems that the original infection might be gone but I think permanently removing these originally created files from it would eliminate the chance that it's still in there waiting to reproduce again.

If you might have any suggestions to do this or if we need to continue as we were previously, let me know where we're at.

    Thanks,
    Lou

Hi Lou. OK I have several things to try. First I would like you to gather your system information. Follow these instructions:

Click Start--->All programs--->Accessories--->System Tools--->System Information A window will appear. Click the file menu then click export.

It will ask for a file name. Please name the file system.txt. Do not copy and paste this file in your reply. The file is likely very large. Just post it as an attachment with the next reply.

Next I would like you to update and run another scan with Ewido in safe mode. Be sure to save the log to your desktop. Follow the instructions below to set up Ewido:

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
    • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
    • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
    • Login on your usual account.
    ______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido and run a full scan.
    • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
    • Click on the Settings tab.
      • Under How to act?
        • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
      • Under How to scan?
        • All checkboxes should be ticked.
      • Under Possibly unwanted software:
        • All checkboxes should be ticked.
      • Under Reports:
        • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
      • Under What to scan?
        • Select Scan every file.
    • Click on the Scan tab.
    • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
    • Let the program scan the machine.
    • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
      • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
      • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)
        scan1nx.jpg
    • When done, click the Save Scan Report button.
      • Click the Save Report as button.
      • Save the report to your Desktop.
    • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
    Reboot in Normal Mode.

After running Ewido (and saving it's log to your desktop) please follow the instructions below:

    Step 1.
    ==========

    - Please download F-Secure's trial Blacklight from here
    - Print out the help page for guidance. It will be found here
    - Click the "I Accept" button at the the license agreement
    - Click the "Download" button to start the download
    - Save it to your Desktop

    Step 2.
    ==========

    - Double-click the blbeta.exe file on your Desktop
    - Select the "I Accept the agreement" at the license agreement, then click "Next"
    - Make sure all open programs and windows are closed (including this IE window) before clicking the "Scan" button
    - Click "Scan
    - When the animated graphics, in the bottom right-hand corner, disappears, click "Next"
    - A text log file will appear on your Desktop when the scan is complete. It will start with fsbl-xxxxxx.txt (ie: fsbl-20051017165931.log)
    - Paste the contents of that log back here.

    Whew!!
    :)

After you have done all this please post back with the attached system information log (remember to attach it, don't post it), the Ewido log, the log from Blacklight, and a fresh Hijack This log.
