smitfraud-c

guys, i have the above according to Spybot..

I've searched and searched but the massive majority of info is based on smitfraud.c which apparently has a blue screen of death or something (which i don't get)

I noticed an old thread, the guy posted his HJT log and one of the guys diagnosed the problem from there.. so guess i should do the same?

here goes..

Its a false positive, so nothing to worry about.

You shouldn't be running TWO Anti-Virus programs (AVG and Avast) as they can conflict and cause more problems. You should remove one of them.

    Thanks for the reply,

It still keeps popping up in spybot saying there's tool1.exe, tool2.exe 3 4 and 5 in my windows folder though which is slightly disconcerting..

i had wondered if there would be a conflict between the two, i'll set about sorting that

Your running HijackThis from the Temp folder - not a good idea as it won't create backups there. Please do this...

Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

    HijackThis 1.99.1

    Then...

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe, and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
    • Copy and paste the log here
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Also, I would like to see another log from HijackThis.
    • Run Hijackthis.
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
    • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
    • Press the Save list button. It will open a Notepad file.
    • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
    • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

Please post the logs requested above.

Hi again .:adz:.! :) I'll remember who those Disney programs are for? :D

    =====

As said in my previous post, you should only have one Anti-Virus program, as multiple AV's can conflict. I see you have Avast, AVG, and Norton which I guess you don't use anymore. Don't do anything yet. Let me know which you want to keep, and I'll give you specific instructions.

    =====

    Lets do some cleaning...

Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    MyWay Search Assistant
    Viewpoint Media Player

    =====

    Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway

    - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
    - Click Fix Checked
    Close HijackThis

    =====

    Panda ActiveScan

    - Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, a new uninstall list, and a new HijackThis Log. Also let me know which AV should go.

i did the first things, but on installation on the panda scan this popped up:

    [img][/img]
remove as it was cocking up the page margins!

i aborted as it suggested.. restarted machine, tried again and it popped up again :/

Ignore it as it thinks Panda is bad, which we know isn't.

We'll sort that out in a minute, but for now please do the following...

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only!

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

    Under Main select the following:
      Windows Temp
      Current User Temp
      All Users Temp
      Cookies
      Temporary Internet Files
      Prefetch
      Java Cache

      *The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

      =====

You are using DAP which is not technically malware, but it may include malware and allow it into your system. You can find Safer Alternatives. Please uninstall DAP in the Control Panel /Add Remove programs.

      =====

Regarding my last post, what AV do you want to keep? Please let me know.

hi, sorry - hectic few days.

i have just cleared things out again using the atf cleaner, i would prefer to keep avg i think because it's a non expiring license etc, regular updates and the like

and have removed DAP (had trouble getting rid of it, but realised for some reason spysweeper was blocking it somehow)

      Hi .:adz:.! :)
...do you do this in your own time unpaid? how do you know all this, just seen it all before and know what to look for??
Yep. I do this in my own time and unpaid - its voluntary! I learnt online. :)

      Lets continue...

Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

      avast! Antivirus
      LiveUpdate 2.6 (Symantec Corporation)

      =====

You may wish to Print or Save the following instructions, as the internet will not be available once in Safe Mode!

Please download Ewido to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
      http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
      • Install Ewido by double clicking the installer.
      • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch Ewido is checked.
      • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
        • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
        • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
        • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
Note: If the Update now option is grayed out, follow the steps below.
          • Click on Update on the toolbar.
          • Under Manual update, click on the Start Update button.
          • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
      • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
      Ewido manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that Ewido is closed before installing the update.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
      • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
      • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
      • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
      • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
      • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
      • Login on your usual account.
      Once in Safe Mode:

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido and run a full scan.
      • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
      • Click on the Settings tab.
        • Under How to act?
          • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
        • Under How to scan?
          • All checkboxes should be ticked.
        • Under Possibly unwanted software:
          • All checkboxes should be ticked.
        • Under Reports:
          • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
        • Under What to scan?
          • Select Scan every file.
      • Click on the Scan tab.
      • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
      • Let the program scan the machine.
      • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
        • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
        • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)
          scan1nx.jpg
      • When done, click the Save Scan Report button.
        • Click the Save Report as button.
        • Save the report to your Desktop.
      • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
Reboot back into Normal Mode, and post a new HJT log, along with the Ewido log.

Hey, sorry about that. I completely forgot about this thread. :(

      Remove the following with Hijackhis

      R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway

Reboot your computer! If they come back you will need to disable some programs becuase they are blocking the fix. Programs to disable:

      Ewido
      1. Open Ewido by double-clicking the yellow 'e' icon in the system tray.
      2. In the 'Your security status' section, toggle the ewido Guard realtime protection 'off' by clicking 'active' which will then change the protection status to 'inactive'.
      3. When you reboot, ewido will prompt you as to whether you would like to "Restart the guard?".
      4. Reply 'no' and set it to 'inactive' for the duration of your cleanup.

      TrojanScanner
I don't have instructions for that. You should be able to close it from the system tray.

      SpySweeper
      1. Open Spysweeper and click on Options > Program Options and uncheck "load at windows startup".
      2. On the left click "shields" and then uncheck everything there.
      3. Uncheck "home page shield".
      4. Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
      5. Exit the program.

Then fix the HijackThis entries. It is important that you enable the protections again.

Your log is clean. Let me know how things are. :)
