Red Alert 2 stuttering

Possibly the wrong place for this but i thought i would ask anyway.

I dusted off my copy of RA2 the other day to play on my comp (nf7-s with a barton 3200+ 512 ram and mediocre nvdia card (fx5500 256mb i think)) and it seems to stutter really badly for a few seconds each time i do pretty much anything. For eg: each time i click to build something it stutters for a few seconds then continues fine. When the building becomes ready to deploy, the computer stutters and then when i actually click a spot to build it, the computer stutters again!

these problems make to game unplayable and seeing as it is a pretty old skool game (ie min spec to play it is MUCH lower than my computer).

I patched with latest updates etc, tried in compatibility mode (even tho it is also for xp), tested all DX9.0c and tried it on my laptop (sempron 2800+ etc) and had the same problem. Then tested it on an old dell laptop i had lurking (should have been folding i guess) which is a celeron 1200 (1.2ghz) and that worked fine for a while then began stuttering after i tried a network game.

There is obviously something up and something i have not done seeing as these computers dont struggle with FAR better and more complex games.

Sorry for the long boring post but as i see it, these typ of games are much more fun as i dont have the spondooly to get the latest hardware to play the latest games!

so.... what should i try? any (seriously ANY!!) ideas would be grand.

RA2 is one of the few (fairly) recent games that holds a lot of gaming content on the disc.

Copy anything named *.MIX to your game directory and see if that improves things.
