Lately my computer has been running digustingly slow. On some occasions, it can take the start menu almost a minute - just to load. I'm assuming there's a virus or spyware somewhere gumming up the works, but I'm having trouble deciphering all this jargon and eradicating the pest. Every so often, a message will pop up that says something like "Win 32 process has shut down"... not the exact words, but that idea. Games run disgustingly slow.

I went on this site, and did the procedure they gave (minus the windows service packs, SP2 looks frightening combined with malware). The link to that procedure? http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43902

I also went ahead and used two online sites, Panda ActiveScan and BitDefender to scan my computer. Panda logged spyware, and BitDefender logged and removed a lot. I can't combine those logs with this post since it is too long, but you need them I can make another post. Just ask for them, I have them saved.

All help is greatly appreciated. If this doesn't work, I'm going to have to format my hard drive and reinstall windows.

I have some bad news. Your computer is infected by the BackDoor-CXT Trojan, which is a Remote Acess Trojan (RAT)

Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing other rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we can't guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing that has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. The only way to be SURE that the infections and the changes they have done are removed is to reformat and reinstall.

If that is acceptable to you, not only would it be safer, but it would probably be less time consuming to do a reformat than to clean up the computer.

Further to the articles you are strongly advised to do the following immediately:

1. Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.

2. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

3. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

Before you decide to reformat you should check that you have all the necessary information and software.

If you decide to continue with a cleanup you should not use this computer for financial or other sensitive transaction.

Make sure you do the THREE points outlined above.

I don't think there is anything important to know about reformatting, that I know of. You can ask in the Windows Forum, and I'm sure you'll get a better answer.
