Internet connection help

edited September 2006 in Science & Tech
Hi. I had a an old RCA cable modem that kept losing connection almost everyday. I got tired of fixing it constantly and went out and bought a new Motorola SURFboard modem and a new Linksys router(WRT-54G). I hooked it all up and it worked great untill the next day. My modem kept losing the connection(very often), but my router says i still have a connection (when i really don't).

Does anyone know how to fix my modem?

When your router says it has a connection, do you mean that it has a link light on the WAN port where the cable modem is plugged in? If that's what you mean, that's normal. Its just telling you it sees the modem and is linked to it. But I'll bet if you look into your WRT54G and look at the Status page, you don't have an IP address. Or if you do have one, if you release it, it won't renew.

If you've had two "bad" cable modems, one of them brand new, I wonder if the problem is with your cable. I've had squirels chew on it, moisture problems, or you might even have a problem with the cable in your house. Sometimes a cheap cable splitter will screw up your internet. Have you called the cable company?

Before you blame the router, plug your computer straight into the cable modem for a day. You might have to unplug the modem for a while so that it will work with your computer's MAC address. But if you keep dropping the internet straight into your computer, that will tell you a lot, and give you more to tell the cable people.

Then after two modems, I'm betting the problem is on the outside of the cable modem.
