need assistance with deleted file.

edited September 2006 in Science & Tech
hello,

I ran CCleaner on my computer and then deleted the files that it had found. After that I have not been able to connect to the internet. My other computer is connected fine and the Network connection icon on my trouble computer says that it is connected but i am not able to connect. I think i may have deleted an important file. Is there anyway to find out what file i may have deleted and then be able to retrieve it? I have tried system restore but it did not help. should i format my copmuter?

Any assistance or suggestions would be appreciated!

Gentle

Try the procedures found here: Winsock Fix+TCP/IP Reinstall.

You likely had a virus or spyware that hijacked your hosts file and moved it to the temp folder. Do as thrax suggested it should fix the issue.

Hi Thrax, thanks for your response.

I have looked at the directions you have provided but im not sure i understand the first part correctly. Where is exaclty do i go to delete the 2 files listed? I am not sure where regedited is. I think i understand the second part ok.

    Hi Thrax,

So i did some searching on the net and i think i figured out what regedit was.
I went to the registery editor and then used the find option to look for the 2 files you said i should delet. I was only able to find the first one. Another thing is that it wasnt a folder, it was a value?! well i deleted it anyways and then followed the second part of your instruction. I tried to connect to the intermet but no luck. :(

Is there anything else i should do?

    Thanks for you help.
