Mac Compatibility question

I have a buddy who is considering getting a Core 2 Duo Mac laptop, but he has a bit of concern with compatibility. His main issue is with office suite type files. If, for example, he types something in word at school on a PC, saves it on a USB drive, and tries to load it on his Mac, if he laptop has Word, will the file be functional? He is concerned about these kinds of things and I told him I'd find some answers.
Thanks all.

If you create it on MS Word, you can open it on MS Word. That is to say, he needs to get the Mac version of Office.

Files generally aren't dependent on the OS for "compatibility" - compatibility is determined at the application level. So a .PSD file created in photoshop can be opened by anything that supports .PSD files - whether the source was a mac or PC makes no difference.

To simplify, there's no difference between a "mac version" of a MS Word .doc file and "PC version" - they're the same file.
