Building DSL Modem/Wireless Router

I am curious about what is involved in trying to build your own DSL Modem and Wireless/Ethernet Router from PC parts and I am sure would be running Linux. It would seem to me that it would be far more versatile vs ordinary equipment like my Linksys router running HyperWRT. It'd be nice to be able to do lots of customizations based on ports for certain IP's as well as all IP's connected which is limited for HyperWRT as nice as it is...

You could also edit the firmware on your router - they're open source :).

I use smoothwall, running on a dell optiplex with a 1.3ghz celeron and 512mb of ram. It supports PCI dsl modems, but I use it strictly as a router.

I like it, but I have a good friend who keeps trying to convert me to monowall.
