Help Me XP won't start

edited September 2006 in Science & Tech
I am new to computers in general and i have XP. My computer won't start. When I turn it on this message come up

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I saw someone posted how to fix it at this link http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_sys32.htm but they are too technical for me to understand. Will someone please walk me through how to fix my computer. Also i read about the recover disk, and windows xp disk. My computer (Compaq Notebook) came with windows xp on it. I know that if i hit F11 when I start it I will go into PC recovery mode, but all I know is that doing that will reinstall windows deleting all my saved changes. Please, will someone help me.
