They work fine by themself:
#

Or in quotes without names:
#

But they get changed otherwise:

clearly a forum breaking bug ;) It's a little annoying though. Or is that just how an italic number sign looks?

It looks just like a hash in itallics here, not sure what you're seeing...

Yeah, looks pretty normal to me too.

I guess the italic pound sign only has one vertical line through it? It looks almosh like a not equals sign.

edit: It only looks like this in the default font size in Firefox. Bigger or smaller it looks like an italic pound sign.

Erm, that looks like a "not" symbol. A pound sign is this £.

    unless you're in the us.

an italic "#" looks like the not symbol to me, in firefox at the default font size.

Different "pound". The # symbol is used to denote weight over here in our non-metric part of the world. :)

I tried hard to avoid that in the first post for that reason...I forgot in the later ones. :)

Aaah, and here was me thinking it was some ACSII codepage craziness.
Afaik I've never seen a symbol used for the weight pounds over here, it just has .lbs after it (on screens, reciepts, info, etc).

I'm using Firefox on a Mac currently, and all three # symbols above have all four lines in them.
