boot disk failure

edited September 2006 in Hardware
I need help. my system has developed an odd problem. Sometimes (but not always when I start up the computer I get a "boot disk failure, insert system disk" error. And when I do not get the error my system boots into windows but then at some point (minutes or hours later) freezes up reboots and gives me the same error again.

I have changed the power supply and the HDD ribbon cable connecting the drive to the motherboard and I am still having the problem. The HDD sounds fine. It is not grinding or clicking; although when it hangs I do hear a quiet click (but this is the same sound that it always makes when it stops spinning). I did manage to run chkdsk and no problems were found.

What is most strange is the intermittent nature of the problem. Any ideas? I am extremely frustrated at this point. Thanks in advance.
