Ntfs

edited October 2006 in Science & Tech
A freind of mine gave me his PC and said it won't boot up. He has Win 2000 with a NTFS hard drive. Can't even get it to boot in safe mode. Obviously no boot disk was created. I can boot with either a win 98 or Win mE boot disk, but that doesn't recognize the C drive. My question is. Can I eliminate the NTFS and format the hard drive with the fdisk utility and then install either Win 98SE or ME. He really didn't need the setup he has and can do ok with a basic windows. I think he got the PC from one of his IT dept friends. I've seen various disagreements on switching the drive back to fat32 or fat from NTFS.
TIA
Arnie

You can switch from NTFS to FAT32 and visa versa (but you need extra software to do the former) but it doesn't matter as it sounds like you're going to be formatting the drive anyway in which case just put in the CD of the OS you want to install, it'll let you format and set it up not long after setup starts and then carry on installing the OS as normal.

I found that the drive had bad sectors. So I replaced it and installed XP, No problem.
    Thanks for the reply
