SMTP limit?

Just talked to a potential new client today. It’s only 20 workstations with about 9 laptops that VPN in and get a Terminal Server desktop. No big deal right? I walk into the server room and there are about 7 (seven) servers in there. A separate DC, separate TS, separate file server….on and on.

So she casually mentions that I’ll be a hero if I can tell her why she can’t broadcast email more than 132 people at a time out of ACT, her contact manager. If she emails 150 people, the first 132 alphabetical contacts get emailed, then 133 – 150 go nowhere.

I searched a bit but my gut is that the problem isn’t ACT, but some SMTP limit. Don’t ask me a lot of questions about this system, I really don’t know much. But it doesn’t seem like a mailbox size limit, more like a limit on number of emails that can be sent at a time. Does that make sense? And if so, does the number 132 ring a bell with anyone as being a default number? I’d like the business and would love it if I could suggest something that is smarter than the guy who made this over-complicated system.

Well the first question is: Who handles their SMTP? Is it done in house, or do they have hosted mail/exchange? Secondly, is their internet connection a low level consumer connection, or is it a dedicated connetion?

Sorry. SMTP = Exchange 2000 down the hall, Internet via T1. I'm thinking of that "messages per hour" SMTP limit rather than something in ACT.
