web.links4all.biz/ problem from MSN messenger

My daugher inadvertently clicked what she thought was picture file from friend she was in online chat with on MSN..since when we have had Mcafee virus scan report numerous PUPs and every time we reboot the PC at start up it opens Internet Explorer at http://web.links4all.biz/ Have tried putting that page in the blocked pages on IE6 but it will not accept it.

Anyway downloaded and went through all 9 steps of the guide Bleeping Computers Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log and here is the hijack log below:

All help to clear this graetfully received. By way Mcafee nbow runs a system scan and says cannot find anything but if then leave the PC a while it starts popping up withmessages saying it has found various different PUPs and deleted them...I have switched off system restore as recommended by the Mcafee site.

Your log indicates an infection with the Forbot.AT worm. We should deal with that first. Please visit this site:

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com

and run the Trend Micro Housecall scan. Allow the scan to remove anything it finds. At the end you will be allowed to save a log file. Please post back here with that log and a fresh Hijack This log.

REPLY: I had run Housecall previously under the 9 steps..first time it had reported some items then cleared them and I had rerun and it said fine. Now on re running it says all fine as you will see below....in meantime however the pop up internet browser page web.links4all.biz is still appearing.......

    Housecall report:
    Everything ok?
    Yes, everything's alright!
HouseCall did not find any potential threats on your computer- you can go on working reliably.
Keep it up and don't give the next attack a chance!

ok followed your instructions (many thanks for them). The one thing not sure of was AVG as when in safe ode unable to amend screen size so could not see if all boxes ticked for 'how to scan' and 'possibly unwanted software'. After ran followed your notes (there were quite a few things quarantined as no doubt the log shows).

Note that when I rebooted out of safe mode back to normal Mcafee reported a pup: ads-mediatickets with installer.exe located at c:\documentsandsettings\myusername\localsettings\temp {I had cleared this out earlier as per your notes} and at same time IE opended again at web.links4all.biz

Here are the two logs you requested:

There are a couple of things we need to deal with one at a time. First visit the site below and run the Purity Scan uninstaller:

    http://www.purityscan.com/uninstall.html

After you do that run Hijack This again and put a check (tick) next to the following entries (do not worry if they don't exist):

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=56626&homepage=http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd={SUB_PRD}&clcid={SUB_CLSID}&pver={SU B_PVER}&ar=home

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [explorer] C:\Documents and Settings\Laura\Desktop\Yinstall.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows Driver Services] msdrvs32.exe

Close all open browsers/windows and click Fix Checked. Close Hijack This.

We need to make sure you can view all hidden files, explained below:
    • Click "Start".
    • Click "My Computer".
    • Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
    • Select the "View" tab.
    • Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading, select "Show hidden files and folders".
    • Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm.
    • Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types".
    • Click "OK".

    Please boot into safe mode.

Next use Windows Explorer to delete the following (do not worry if they don't exist):

    C:\Documents and Settings\Laura\Desktop\Yinstall.exe<---This file.

Use the Windows search feature to search for the following file:

msdrvs32.exe<---I'm guessing this is in the C:\Windows\system32 folder but we need to check anyway.

When and if found delete every instance of it. Reboot the PC and post a fresh Hijack This log.

    ok done.
    for your info:
    - when ran HJT first time found and 'fix checked' all 3 files
    - in safe mode found the ynstall.exe file in laura\local docs butran full search inc hidden files for msdrvs32.exe and no files found....
when restarted this time before ran the HJT log below for first time IE did not open by itself and web.links4all.biz did not pop up.
    A hopeful sign?

    Here is the log:

Well now. That log looks clean to me. One thing I notice is that you're Java is outdated. Update it following the below:

    Update Java:

Your version of Java is now outdated. Java vulnerabilites are commonly exploited by viruses so I strongly recommend you update. Click here to download the latest version of java ( Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 ). Please install it and then reboot your computer.

Remove the older versions of Java:
    1. Click Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.
    2. Delete all Java updates except J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8

Note that if update 8 is not found keep the most recent you do have as well as the upgrade to version 9. Aside from that are you having any other problems?
