Specs please. Try uninstalling your sound or chipset drivers then reinstalling them. If that doesn't work uninstalling them, then doing a repair install of windows. Then reinstall them. Good luck. If worst comes to worse then back up and reformat :-/

    xamaniac,

Before even CONSIDERING installing a new DX version, uninstall all sounddrivers, videodrivers and that stuff. Then uninstall old DX, then install new DX and finally all sound and videodrivers.

DirectX is a bitch if you dont do it right, i have been there.

    Backup, Reformat, Reinstall Windows.

    RWB had this to say
    Backup, Reformat, Reinstall Windows.

Why? You still need to install it anyway. Do you format the harddrive when you get a spam email?

For future reference, it's always a good idea to set a system restore point before you install something like DirectX, so if it goes pear shaped, you can just revert back to before you installed it. That works with DirectX right Mack'?

An even better thing to do is install Windows on a smallish say 3 or 4GB partition on its own and Ghost it regularly. More foolproof than System Restore and you could even burn it onto a DVD if you had a DVD writer. Would also save you from more critical times when you can't boot or get into safe mode.
