Hi to all.
I am currently working on a friends computer. He believes he got a virus whilst using MSN messenger a few days ago. The virus apparently started deleting his files and his computer no longer recognises his CD rom and DVD rom. I have attached a hijackthis log file. If anyone is able to take a look it will be much appreciated.

    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
    2. Click "Open Process manager"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

    D:\Program Files\WhenUSearch\whse.exe
    D:\Program Files\Common Files\WhenU\DTAdapter.exe

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    ===============

    Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: DeskbarBHO - {A8B28872-3324-4CD2-8AA3-7D555C872D96} - D:\Program Files\Deskbar\deskbar.dll (file missing)

    O2 - BHO: DeskbarBHO - {A8B28872-3324-4CD2-8AA3-7D555C872D96} - D:\Program Files\Deskbar\deskbar.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: Trixie.Bho - {B0744341-96E0-4341-9ED2-8BC36CE0CCD0} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: WhenUSearch Helper - {BA2325ED-F9EB-4830-8FCE-0BC35B16969B} - D:\Program Files\WhenUSearch\search.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: System Process - {C2EEB4FA-B6D6-41b9-9CFA-ABA87F862BCB} - D:\WINDOWS\system32\navshext.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: PrintViewBHO Class - {D4E0C464-30CE-4075-9A10-71FD106C2847} - D:\PROGRA~1\PRINTV~1\PRINTH~1.DLL (file missing)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WhenUSearchWHSE] "D:\Program Files\WhenUSearch\whse.exe"

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {20CCCFEC-D26F-4ffe-996B-388B39C8CCCA} - D:\WINDOWS\system32\mscoree.DLL
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Tri&xie Options... - {20CCCFEC-D26F-4ffe-996B-388B39C8CCCA} - D:\WINDOWS\system32\mscoree.DLL

    O16 - DPF: {42F2C9BA-614F-47C0-B3E3-ECFD34EED658} - http://promo.dollarrevenue.com/activ...33352D2D2D.exe

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: Dynamic Directory - D:\WINDOWS\system32\aEd.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: Reliability - D:\WINDOWS\system32\mdxoci.dll (file missing)

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    folders...

    D:\Program Files\WhenUSearch
    D:\Program Files\Common Files\WhenU

    files...

    D:\WINDOWS\system32\mscoree.DLL

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
    Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

    Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

    1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
    2) Next, "Enable all protection".
    3) Exit the program.

    -

    Thanks for getting back to me Crunchie. I will get onto this soon.
    Yesterday I reinstalled Windows on the computer that had the virus so things may look a little odd when I post new results. I will still run all of the steps as you have suggested though, as I realise the virus may still be there.
    Cheers,
    B

    If you reformatted, then installed the right security programs before going online, the pc should be clean. I would perhaps just run AVG anti spyware if that is the case, then post the logs.
