Hello All!!! First I would like to say that this site has proven very helpful in removing spyware and junk like that from my CPU. Thanks a million! Here is another issue I was looking for some help in...

I like to download mp3s. I end up getting them in all sorts of file types(i.e.; .pdf, .brk, .bmp, .class, .doc, .txt, .tiff, .tmp, .xls). What can I do to decode these and how can I prevent this issue in the future? Any help would be lovely!

Thanks,

Helpless in Atlanta...

Renaming the file extension should work. Click file > hit F2 > rename file extension > question box about changing file extension > hit yes. Should work unless you got bogus files.

If they are infact MP3 files than do as BH says, that will then use the correct program to open them, but it sounds more likely that they aren't actually MP3s at all (unless they are using it to bypass websites file restrictions).

I would make sure to Virus scan them all before going anywhere near them, to be honest.

You cant really 'stop' this from happening, unless you find a better source for music downloads.

Oh, and it's a computer btw, not a CPU, a CPU is just one of the chips inside your computer :rolleyes2

If you have gobs of them, there is a handy tool called "Renamer" which can do as many as you want automatically. It takes a little getting used to - if it looks helpful just yell and I'll give you some tips.

    Thanks Guys!
Right, right, right, central processing unit, just a blonde moment... I am going to check out the attachment from profdlp, and the process described by BH. Thank you all for your help. Any idea how to get around those pesky passwords? BH, will your idea work on zip files with passwords? Can I assume that if the file is average size for an mp3 that a simple rename will work?

It's never safe to assume anything with computers... :p

I would follow NightShades advice of a virus scan first thing. Then copy all of the files in question to a temporary folder. That way you can fiddle with the copies all you want without fear of losing anything if it turns out that the ".zip" file really is a zipped file. Once you're satisfied that you have a file working you can go back and delete the original file having the wrong extension.

    Don't think so.

The renamer worked beautifully! There are still a few files that didn't go but I think they have their own issues. Now, any idea on how to uncover or bypass passwords for zip files? Any other thoughts as I go forward in my endevor to find the newest, unsigned bands in the world? I am still trying to convert .txt, .doc, and .html. Should I try renaming them to other file types supported by Real One?

If you have to break zip file passwords, 7-13 characters takes more than a week with a brute-force password cracker.

You can't break zip passwords without a huge amount of resources or knowledge. The best thing it to check with the site that you've downloaded it from. They usually have an indicator of the type of file and the encryption key if any.

The issue I alway sseem to run into is the web site they give to get the password from is not found or unavailable. To the forum: Where is the best place to get a wide variety of FREE mp3s?

Ok, Ok...I'm cheap. I'm not looking to get all that commercial stuff, I'm trying to find live and rare cuts and bands I've never heard of. I've looked into subscription sites and they all offer the same corporate music that I am trying to avoid. Mp3.com is decent, thanks prime! I will check out croc's idea too. I am also looking to find some funny video and audio clips. Any sugestions?

Downloading *.mp3s is bad. It promotes communism and hinders the war on terror. Well, that's what the RIAA told me.

There are many avenues to procure said files, you just have to use the internet and so some searching. I would talk to your spiritual advisor first since that is the path of evil. When you download copyrighted material, everyone loses.

...now...where did I put my 10 disc radiohead "towering above the rest" compilation.....
