Thinking of getting started in a PC game. Suggestions?

I haven't played any games on my PC. I play Halo 2 a lot on my Xbox, and Forza Motorsports on rare occassion, but that's about it. I tried one or 2 other games for a day or 2.

Lately I've heard a lot about World of Warcraft, but I'm not sure I'd be interested in some sort of medieval type game. I've tried Runescape, but didn't get very far with it. It is free, so that's one good point for Runescape. I may try it a bit more.

Any suggestions on what game titles I might consider for playing on my PC?

Halo 2 covers my FPS game playing, I'm looking for something else.

I know, I haven't given much information here, but take a guess and throw me some ideas.

The Civilization series is good. It's a turn-based strategy game. Civ 3 is old and you can find it pretty cheap. Civ 4 is the newer version and an expansion was just released. My personal favorite of the series is Civ 1 which by now is about 15 years old.

WoW is an MMO (Massively Mulitplayer Online) game. I currently play the game of the same genre called Star Wars Galaxies. I believe that WoW has a 14-day free trial. I'm tempted to try WoW, but I'm really not into the wizards, orcs, and magic type of stuff.

I know you said your FPS needs are taken care of but honestly, try F.E.A.R. Spooky game.

I would recommend Age of Empires II/III. Age of Empires II is one of my all time favorite game, I still play it periodically. I personally haven't played AoE III but I assume it is AoE 2 with updated gameplay and graphics.

Rise of Nation Rise of Legends is also a fun game.

hey, i have always been a fan of first person shooter games, however you may think differentley..i personally could play Counterstrike forever...i think Counterstrike Source is a really good game and i reccomend it...however, if you like to try out strategy games, warcraft or age of empires, you mentioned how you are not interested in midieval type games...but it is always fun building up a huge army in AoE and then sending them to their almost deffinate doom at the enemies castle...lol...:)...i say counterstrike source or age of empires 2/3...

If you like Halo you might like games like Battlefield 2 , or Call od Duty 2. If you like start games, Company of Heroes is awesome, Battle For Middle Earth 2 is cool, Age Of Empires 3, ummm... I enjoy a few othe rgames but lack the time to play them :)

Keep in mind Battlefield 2 is pretty much online only. The AI, even on hardest mode in single player is easy as hell (even with realism mods I normally still end up with 300+ points with the top AI having around 60). It also only lets you play the small maps and change no options in single player too (although it is possible to hack the game up to change a bit more, but it's not nice having to go through that much effort to change basic features).

Call of Duty 2, even though a little unrealistic was a nice little cinematic experience. I'd probably recommend AoE 2 over the third one though (and cheaper to boot).

Games like Max Payne are nice, if not far too short. Maybe NeverWinter Nights if you like RPGs and deffinately Oblivion.

Can you say Red Alert 2? I use to play this all the time a few years back. I like all the C & C games, though I haven't tried any of the newer ones like Generals or whatever these kids are coming out with these days.. :D

Actually I loved the C&C games but HATED Red Alert 2 because the game just seemed to be running in 2x speed and everything looked far too cartoony. The other ones (Original C&C, Original Red Alert, etc) were all good, and despite Generals being NOTHING to do with the C&C world, it is still good and seems to be more like the original C&C gameplay.

The Half Life series. You can start with HL2 if you want, but you'll miss out on a lot unless you start from the first game.

FarCry is another excellent FPS. It's very challenging, and make sure you get it patched up before you start playing.

F.E.A.R. is my third. The sequel is coming out this month (I think) and it looks spectacular too. Just make sure you have the PC hardware to handle it.

the Battle for Middle Earth II is a very nice game. Especially when editing the inis to have fun against the computer. 3 on 1 turn out to be very interesting, especially when increasing the command point limit.

Agree with all that. F.E.A.R. Extraction Point is due out 26 Oct. I'll be having that.

    I've got another to add.

    I've been playing Heroes V. It's a fantasy based RPG/TBS game.

i'd recommendthe Icewind Dale Series. not only are they amazing to play, but also there getting old so you can pick them up cheap. They're RPG's, alot like Bulder's Gate, infact Bulder's Gate is made by the same people, and is the predeccessor to the Icewind Dale series. :)

Half Life 2. Probably the best game ever!

Here are my recommendations by genre:

    FPS (First Person Shooters):
    • Half Life 2 (amazing graphics, voice acting, gameplay etc. Plus, you get the OMG-Gravity Gun!!!) Oh and you get Counter Strike Source with this, but IMO, it really sucks! It doesn't know the word realism at all...
    • Half Life
    • Call of Duty. 1 is better than 2.
    • Battlefield 2. This is a very heavy game, I get tired of the loading times, plus sometimes vehicles are annoying, but definately worth playing!

    Strategy
    • Rome: Total War. My all time favourite strategy game. Combines RTS with turn based. Also worth trying Medieval: Total War, plus upcoming Medieval 2 Total War.
    • Civilization, mainly 3 but 4 is good too.
    • Of course, AoE2 is good. Avoid 3 though, it is horrible.
Oh and avoid Battle for Middle Earth!!! It sucks, instead, check out the Fourth Age: Total War mod for Rome Total War!

Well, those were the genres I had time to list right now :P

Hope I helped you in your hard decision ;)

Ok, I got one to add. GTA: Vice City. Its a wide open free roaming world and were else can steal some ones car and then run them over with it. It runs great on todays hardware. GTA: San Andreas is fun too but there are problems with it running on some machines.

Never Winter Nights 2 is coming out soon and I give a bump to Farcry. It rocks. If your at all into First Person Shooters then you must not miss it.

F.E.A.R. is good except for the ending. I won't give it away but....it made me sad.
