Troy under Seige! Getting hijack and stormed! [Resolved]

This is bad ang getting worse. I need some serious help PDQ, and am on my knees sending out some serious distress signals, flares and rockets screaming for "HELP" . :banghead:

This all started after a torrent download last week. All attempts to remove/fix/ modify/ etc. only results in more serious results. So far I have removed LM2, SMITFRAUD, and others which have bene found. I have Smitfraudfix, LM2fix. lm2destroyer, etc. Currently running NOD32, SPYBOT S&D, AVGAS. After I thought everything was repaired. I rebooted for 100th time, and logged on. Pop up started again and then I noticed the little Yellow /!\ icon in the tray for windows update running. Mouse over said updating. I logged off and XP tells on shutdown, "installing updates please wait....1-13........ " DOH I thought it was legiti and let it run. On next log on Microsoft tells me my system hardware/software configuaration has changed so much I need to reactivate! On log on the virus Symantec pops up showing me TROJAN.HORSE. NOD32 says TROJAN BHO.g, running on mbfkraka.dll in the system32 folder. SPYBOT and AVGAS say all is well. But it is not! :hiding:

You can see all my antivirus/ spyware programs running. :confused2

As soon as I go online I get hijacked and it starts connecting in the background and downloading more viruses, Adware, Malware. Now with XP firewall on and without exceptions. In early stages this was the first thing that was silently disabled.

Whatever the last 13 downloaded installed programs were that pretended to be windows update are very concerning. I hope someone can help, please.
Is there any recovering from this and what is the possible damage/security compromises do you spoze could I be facing?

All else fails!
Humbly waiting....

Hi. It's possible those Windows Updates were real. Microsoft just released a load of them yesterday. Anyway, I do see some problems. Follow these instructions first:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
    • Turn your computer back on.
    • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Great thanks.... yes I thought perhaps they might be, but do updates cause such configuration changes to require reactivation of XP? It happened just after the system went bad last week too.

Before running Vundofix I ran SPYBOT, AVG and NOD32 again. SPybot said I was clean. AVG and NOD32 found Trojan.downloader.busky variant. None found what VUNDOFIX found.
    VundoFix V6.2.1

    Checking Java version...

    Java version is 1.4.2.6

    Java version is 1.5.0.6

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\abadd.ini2
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\abadd.tmp

    Done!

Before running Vundo I scanned again wiht NOD32 and AVG

Vundo took some time to run but seems to have stopped all background hijacking that I am aware of.

Here is the HJT log afterwards.

Some odd behaviour IE is very slow, and grinds away before loading.
But no popups and no new trojans.

I am thrilled and went to log in to paypal to donate to Vundo and SpybotS&D and Paypal drops the connection after login immediately after pushing submit.

Is there anything I can do to run a any IE or Windows repair from MS now?

I'll delete my system restore logs.

Please let me know there are any results to follow up further with.

I cannot thank you enough. US taxes are due on Monday and I need to work on my main PC. YOu have saved the day it seems.
    Nice one!

    Goodnight from London

jas, do you have both AVG & NOD32 as antivirus installed on your computer? if so uninstall ONE of them as having TWO (2) or more antivirus is NOT a good idea as it can cause system crashes, hogs system memory *ram*, and they will "fight" for scanning rights thus allowing more viruses in..just wanted to get that tidbit of info in this post:vimp:

The Vundo Trojan was causing the problems you describe. It can be a real bugger but you are not out of the woods yet. Please click Start--->Run. In the run box type appwiz.cpl.

In the list that appears look for the following program:

    Toolbar888

Click the remove button if the program is found. Next run Hijack This again and put a check (tick) next to the following:

Close all other browsers/windows and click Fix Checked. Close Hijack This. Reboot the PC and post a fresh Hijack This log. And be sure to look at the post above by jmoney3457.

It is not out of lack of apreciation, just lost work and sleep! :hair: There just was so much time lost from Vundo and other 159 other logged malicious ad/mal-ware & trojan threats that it brought down the pipe into my machine including both LM2 and SMITFRAUD for the past 5 days. These were found and removed. But before you helped me last night. Vundo remained hidden and tricked all the commercial virus scanners. It also seemed to make a joke Windows SP2 Firewall, it just kept door open for more and more.

    So far all seems well...........

    Thank you again!

No problem Jas. Your log is clean. Vundo can be a real nasty and only a special tool can remove it, you unfortunately didn't have that tool until you came here. Anyway, I'll close this thread now. If you need any further assistance please post a new thread. Also read below for tips on keeping your PC clean.
    :)

Congratulations. Your log is clean! You should reward yourself very liberally! Now some pointers on how to stay clean and keep your sanity. You may be thinking now "how did I get infected?" Please read this great article: So how did I get infected in the first place.

Next follow the instructions below to keep yourself free from infection.

Disable and then enable system restore to purge infected restore points.

    Turn OFF System Restore.
    1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    2. Click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check Turn off System Restore.
    5. Click Apply.
    6. Click OK.

    To enable system restore:
    1. Uncheck the box by Turn off system restore
    2. Click Apply.
    3. System restore is now on.
    4. Create a restore point by clicking Start--->All programs--->Accessories--->System tools--->System restore
    5. Select the bubble that says Create restore point. Then click Next.
    6. Give the restore point a meaningful name like post malware removal. Then click OK.

Rehide hidden files and folders. During your fix if you were asked to "show hidden files and folders" you should go back now and re-hide them. You wouldn't want to accidentally delete important files. Follow the instructions below:
    • Click "Start".
    • Click "My Computer".
    • Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
    • Select the "View" tab.
    • Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading, select "Do not show hidden files and folders".
    • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
    • Check the "Hide file extensions for known file types".
    • Click Apply then click "OK".

Update with SP2 if you don't aleady have it.
Visit Windows Update and follow the onscreen instructions to download and install SP2.
This is a time consuming process, even with a fast connection. If you use a dial-up connection you should consider getting a FREE copy
directly from Microsoft or get a friend with a fast connection to burn a copy of the upgrade to CD for you.

    Update the OS regularly

Set up system to ensure a regular update of the Operating System.

    Manually:

Visit Windows Update on a weekly/fortnightly REGULAR basis.

    Automatically:
    1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    2. Click Properties.
    3. Click on Automatic Updates.
    4. Check the option of choice (I use Automatic (Recommended)). If you use dial-up I would recommend using the
Notify Me option so that you can download when you can afford the time and bandwidth overheads.
    5. Select the Day/Time of choice
    6. Click Apply
    7. Click OK

    Secure your web browser
    1. Open Internet Explorer and click on the Tools menu and then click on
      Security
    2. Click the Internet icon
    3. Click onCustom Level.
    4. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    5. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    6. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    7. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    8. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    9. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    10. Change the Allow paste operations via script to Disable
    11. Click on OK
    12. Save (if asked).
    13. Click on Applybutton
    14. Click on OK

Alternatively you could use another browser such as
    Mozilla Firefox (My personal favorite!)
    Opera

    Get Some Protection
The following programs are useful in the fight against Malware. Best of all, they're FREE.
Download and install any or all . Be warned though ---- You must update regularly. Check once a week!
    • Ad-Aware SE - This is a
program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine.
    • Spybot Search &
      Destroy
-Similar to Ad-Aware but more configurable and incorporates Teatime, a memory resident utility that protects the system
      registry. I recommend
    • Spyware Blaster -
It Prevents the addition of ActiveX Controls on your machines by
      isolating the system registry.
A good antiviral program is essential. AVG is one of the better known, and trusted, antivirals.

And Finally.........Lock the door with a Firewall . XP comes with its own simple firewall but I prefer to substitute it with
    ZoneAlarm.

I wish you very happy, and most importantly, safe surfing on the information superhighway. Just remember it can be dangerous.
