I'll pitch in some money to help offset the cost of the experiment, if you guys decide to go through with it

    That's appreciated, I'm sure.

So what are we going to test? I assume we have crappy mobo's/proc's around to make a basic GPU support system, so as far as the GPU's to test, here's my ideas - anyone else have any?

(also note that AGP is getting to be kinda old, prices for good cards are going *up* for AGP, apparently. Might be better off going on eBay instead of buying new)

    $83.00 X1600PRO 256MB 126-bit 8xAGP 500/800mhz
    $68.00 X1600PRO 256MB 128-bit 16xPCIe ???/???mhz
    $92.00 X1600PRO 512MB 128-bit 16xPCIe ???/???mhz

OK, looks like a X1600PRO life-support system is about $250 with all new components. (not that this price includes everything...a case, power supply, HD... (i forgot a CD drive, but you could borrow one to install the OS)

    Check it out!

    AMD-based: $250
    AMD GPU.pdf

    Intel-based: $260
    Intel GPU.pdf

Maybe it's time to revise the minimum requirements for the SMx boxes? Seems like a folding box based around a GPU can use much crappier parts...?

EDIT: note that a rig like this would take 34 hours to complete a WU on the X1600 GPU!

Actually I think prof WOULD be better able to perform this experiment. I really don't have enough time to devote to this, and it needs to get done right. :)

I outfitted the same systems above (the pdf's based on the X1600PRO) with X1900XT's and zalman coolers to OC them. Here's what happens:

    $643 Intel-based OC'ed X1900XT support system:
    643-intel.pdf

    $633 AMD-based OC'ed 1900XT support system:
    633-amd.pdf

Note that both of these systems should be able to complete a WU in about 9 hours, 10 minutes. Not bad for the cost vs. ppd output of a GPU rig...

Even better if you already have a case, hard drive, PC3200 DDR memory...

    I wasn't trying to snake you. :)

On the other hand, I do have a Duron 1300 rig already Folding here which could use an infusion of point producing power. For that matter, I could see how it does on one of these Celeron rigs I just acquired.:fold::clap:

What if you take out the HDD and fold from an USB key with that distro you made on another thread? That should save some bucks on the HDD plus some watts. :D

BTW, check out the new ATI X1950 Pro that came out... that seems like the PERFECT GPU for dedicated folding, price/performance wise...

usb would be cool, but i'm not sure if they have a linux gpu client yet...?

I'll build a newegg rig w/ the x1950pro. you want overclock with that? :)

is that the same as X1950XTX? don't see a x1950pro on newegg yet

Looks like an X1950XTX-based system is the best for the money.

...now who'd going to be the first to build a dedicated GPU F@H box...

    x1950xtx.pdf

At $627, this seems like a pretty good deal for a (maybe) 800-900+ ppd SMx machine.

Maybe I'll build 30 of these for my next lab turnover! :D 30x900 ppd!

The X1950 Pro was just announced today. It should replace the X1900GT and cost a bit less.

Remember that these GPUs still require a good PSU. Consider that when building a low end machine with a high end GPU. :D

yeah, i figured with such a low-end system, the GPU is putting out 80% of the load, so 350W should do it.... :-) Trying to cut it as close as I can...

Anyone did the experiment on an old AGP system?
