Ok I was gonna buy a plextor cdrw because they are so rebowned for their exceptional quality and speed on digital audio extraction.

The lite on is about a third the price. Does any know how they do for DAE?

If you are extracting properly, such as using the Secure mode on EAC then all the drives will do pretty much the same, around the 5x area, so there really won't be a great deal in it. The only time you will see a difference is when you are using burst or normal extraction, but then the audio is likely to have errors in it and isn't worth doing anyway.

To put it simply, it doesn't matter.

I have a bunch of drives that do 5x but I have two for example that are over 15x. I know plextor is supposed to be the best. I think they introduced the CAV crap and do a more accurate extraction faster. Thats one of their claims to fame really but plextor is also way way more expensive. Was just hoping someone out there had a new 56x sony or lite-on and could post their speeds.

I am basing the speed I quoted as the one I get by using Nero's cd drive test where they verify its ability to do secure dac and the speed that it can be done with. I had like 10 cdroms around the house from 40x up and never realized the differance until I started testing them all. Most do 4 to 5x just like you quoted but two do a lot better. Three times faster. And I want to re-rip my 300+ cd's down to MP3 format again and I want to make it as painless as possible so I want to buy a very very fast cdrom just to rip the cd-audio.

But Sony is claiming they now have one of the fastest DAE drives and I was wondering what I could expect from a new sony or lite-on. I can get new 52x/32x/52x burners of either one on eBay for 37 bucks plus shipping. If they are another 50 percent faster then the 15x DAE cdroms I have now then its worth it to upgrade it seems. Just hoping someone with a real kickass new cdrom could run the Nero benchmark for cd DAE and report what they get also.

    Cheers

    Using Nero 6 CD-DVD Speed

    Samsung DVD-rom/CD-RW combo:

    Speed:
    Start: 18.59x
    End: 41.39x

    Seek:
    Random 90ms
    1/3: 418ms
    Full: 399ms

    CPU useage:
    1x: 1%
    2x: 1%
    4x: 3%
    8x: 6%

    Burst Rate:
    1 MB/Sec

    DAE Quality:
    10
    No errors.

I can't seem to find the DAE speed test anywhere though.

My old Yamaha (1999) is supposed to extract DAE at 40x. I'll go downstairs and have a play with it....

Just out of interest though, try those "faster" drives with EAC ( http://atomnet.co.uk/?p=programs&search=exact )

I had a Lite-on 40x12x48 and used the LAME codec in CDEX. I don't remember the exact speeds I got, approx. 5-8x sounds right, but the quality was always very good.
