Zunarmx

edited October 2006 in Spyware & Virus Removal
I have read these threads and have been able to remove a couple of items on my own.

I use a test at CA. The test ends with nothing found. Recently I have been unable to use the test because it stops part way through the test. I tested, and tested to see where it gets stopped.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\zunarmx.

I want to remove the zunarmx but I did not want to go in to the registry without some back up.

Adaware log is available at the same log time as HJT.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR TAKING YOUR TIME TO LOOK AT MY LOG!

You can back up the registry manually or you can use this program:

    Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
    • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
      http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
    • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
    • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.

Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

If you need help deleting that sub-key let me know. By the way what type of symptoms are you having?

The computer is not having any symtoms. It is a little slow through web pages. It may be redirected.

I just cannot use the test that I use because it gets "bumped off".

OK. Well let me know how that test turns out. I don't see anything jumping out at me in your log.

I was unable to find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\zunarmx

I removed a program from PC Pitstop, and I can now do the test all the way through.

It is showing that I have CnsMin

Hijacks the search feature in IE, replacing your typed search strings with Chinese characters and taking you to a Chinese search site. These functions are likely of value to many Chinese users, but are not appreciated by others. On June 7, 2004 PestPatrol researched CnsMin and at that time removal was nearly impossible and the uninstaller which was included removed most components, but left the machine with no network or Internet connection. In 6 out of 6 boots after installing CnsMin, our machine crashed within 5 minutes. CnsMin was intended to be a search support tool for users, but its operation in our test machines suggests that the current version, when run in an English computer, should be classified as a Nuker. CPR again researched CnsMin July 9, 2004 and the results were nearly the same as above except no uninstalled was provided. In addition, numerous popup ads were displayed which were difficult to close.

I have not seen anything from this to date, but I do remember clicking on a chinese website during a Google search by accident.

It also shows that I have Adware "EliteMedia" found in:
    File "C:\WINDOWS\Help\nocontnt.GID"

any advice? Adaware/Spybot S+D did not see it.

    THANKS TO EVERYONE AGAIN!

I think both the above mentioned items may be false positives. Easy to do if the tools heuristics are real sensitive. EliteMedia shows real well in HJT logs and I'm not seeing it, plus the test you ran shows it in the Windows Help directory which is surely an odd place for it. Probably the best thing to do is to run a thorough scan with AVG Anti-Spyware. If anything is there it's the most likely to detect and quarantine it.

Make sure that you can see hidden files and folders:
    • Click "Start".
    • Click "My Computer".
    • Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
    • Select the "View" tab.
    • Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading, select "Show hidden files and folders".
    • Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm.
    • Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types".
    • Click "OK".

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware from my signature below. Save the install file to your desktop.
    • Install AVG by double clicking the installer.
    • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG is checked.
    • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
      • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
      • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
      • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
Note: If the Update now option is grayed out, follow the steps below.
        • Click on Update on the toolbar.
        • Under Manual update, click on the Start Update button.
        • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
    • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG.
    AVG manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG is closed before installing the update.
