50+ processes running at once...please help me delete some!

LaRockLaRock TX, USA
edited October 2006 in Science & Tech
OK, I don't know how I have this many processes running at once, but it unquestionably slows my computer down. Here is a screen grab of most of the processes (I couldn't fit them all on one page so I at least sorted them by memory usage).

attachment.php?attachmentid=21465&stc=1&d=1161526671

This is with no programs open at the time. I do have a local weather forcaster (the KAMR program) running, but nothing else is open at the time.

Could someone please tell me which of these I could delete? I don't know much about computers and I'd hate to delete something that would harm my computer's performance.

Thanks so much!

It's difficult for someone to "step in" and tell you what you don't need or want ...that decision should be up to you.
The best place to start is by going into add/remove programs and dump anything you don't need or want. Then check out the taskbar ...is there anything there you don't need or want just set it to manual or disable in services.msc.
You can also google some winxp tweaks and they can give you a good idea of what the standard services do and also give you a good idead of which are safe to set to manual or disable.
    Hope this helps some.

Your running AVG and McAfee together, which is not a good idea. You should Uninstall one of them.

Post a HijackThis log. This will show everything you've got running. It also will help identify anything which might have snuck in behind your back.

Like csimon says (Ha!), what a person has running on startup is entirely up to them. What one guy might find useless may be another persons favorite program. The best we can do is tell you which ones we would ditch and why, the rest is up to you. :)

Your running AVG and McAfee together, which is not a good idea. You should Uninstall one of them.

When I go to "Add/Remove Programs" all I see is McAfee Firewall, McAfee Personal Firewall Plus, and McAfee Security Center. Does AVG have a firewall included? I always heard you need a firewall to protect yourself and I'm not sure if deleting the McAfee firewall will leave me vulnerable.

Here is my Hijack This log:

Thanks again for all the advice! I definitely understand that it is ultimately up to me to decide what to keep and what to delete, but I really do appreciate any suggestions.

Also, I have a semi-related question. My wife has the game Zuma installed. It is run through RealArcade. Do I still have to keep Real Player in order to run RealArcade? I never use Real Player and I'd be happy to delete it if I knew my wife could still play Zuma.

I say zuma is essential ...keep wifey happy! LOL
Can't answer that question though ...

I think Real Arcade needs Real Player to work. You could always uninstall Real Player and see what happens.

AVG does not come with a Firewall. Here are some Firewalls that are Free for personal use:

Zone Alarm << I recommend this
    Sunbelt Kerio PF
    Outpost Firewall

If you plan on removing McAfee, then do this:

    - Download one of the Firewalls above to your Desktop - Do not install it yet.
    - Disconnect from the internet (safety measure) and remove McAfee from Add/Remove programs.
    - Connect to the internet and install the Firewall before doing anything else.

    _________________________

You have BackWeb-8876480.exe on your computer by Logitech. Some backround info:

BackWeb started life as push technology software which enabled you to subscribe to various information channels of your choice so that your selected information channels would pop up on your screen with the latest world news, entertainment news, etc…, whatever you might have chosen. You can configure the original BackWeb to download the news for later viewing, to display the news as desktop background, ticker, or popup window.

This did not take off as well as expected and, crucially, it was also not paying for itself. As a result, BackWeb quickly went into other markets. One of the two significant ones is advertising adware where websites, ISPs, or software manufacturers include BackWeb on their site, in their ISP software, or in their software and, whenever you connect to the Internet, BackWeb also connects to retrieve advertisements which are then displayed on your screen or in your browser . The other significant one is that BackWeb is also routinely installed on new personal computers by specific computer manufacturers with the aim being that BackWeb will automatically check for vital updates to the personal computer's setup whenever the end-user connects to the web. Such manufacturers include Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, LogiTech, and Kodak; however, some of these may have stopped this practice.

Recommendation: Unless you are using BackWeb for news content, we strongly recommend uninstalling it for the following reasons:

    1. It is often a serious resource hog.
    2. In most cases. it is also advertising adware.
    3. It slows down your Internet connection which is unacceptable if you connect by modem.
    4. It has the potential for sending out information from your personal computer.
    5. If needed, click here for more Information

If you want to remove this, then look for BackWeb in Add/Remove programs and Uninstall it. Then remove this entry with HijackThis:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] \Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe

Programs like MusicMatch, Quicktime and Real Player do not need to startup with Windows. I would stop those with msconfig.

Let us know how it goes. :)

Woah...I tried to install ZoneAlarm and I couldn't even get internet access. I had to reinstall McAfee and it automatically installed all the McAfee programs. I did get rid of BackWeb though. Now I am down to 48 processes running.

I really didn't want to get rid of AVG but I had so much trouble with ZoneAlarm. Is there a good tutorial to start that up? When I did last time I had no Internet connection and therefore couldn't get online help.

If all else fails I can get rid of AVG and keep McAfee I guess.

Did you allow Zone Alarm access to the internet? Here is a link for Technical Support. Check out the PDF for version 6.5 and read the installation and setup section. You could try one of the other Firewalls too

Have you disabled the other programs listed at the bottom of my my previous post?

I'll take a closer look at your HJT log in a bit, but I'll tell you right now that McAfee is one of my least favorite programs of all time. As far as tying up your computer goes it is worse than many of the viruses from which it is supposed to be protecting you. I'd stick with AVG and work on getting one of the firewalls that Trogan_1000 recommended working, then ditch McAfee like a bad date.

OK, ZoneAlarm installation went much more smoothly this time. I now have McAfee gone and I did disable the programs that you listed, Trogan.

I checked my running processes, and I still have 43 processes running:

    attachment.php?attachmentid=21476&stc=1&d=1161570581

Maybe this is normal, but with 100% CPU usage I doubt it.

Any other suggestions? Thanks so much for your help so far!

    It's 100% cpu usage because you're folding.

yeh, do you see where it say FahCore_78.exe? That is the folding process, and it is using 95% of your processor at that moment. Folding uses whatever percentage of the processor that isnt currently being used by other programs.

OK...I want to fold still. So what I have running is OK now?

folding doesn't slow down your computer, so don't worry about that. Here are some things you can get rid of:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Logitech Utility] Logi_MwX.Exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDLauncher] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Component Manager] "C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe"

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellSupport] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe" /startup
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PopUpStopperFreeEdition] "C:\PROGRA~1\PANICW~1\POP-UP~1\PSFree.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] \Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background

    O4 - Global Startup: QuickBooks Update Agent.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBUpdate\qbupdate.exe

those entries are not malicious, but neither are they necessary. They are mostly resident things that you can do manually - such as quickbooks updater service or the logitech update service, etc.

Cool! I honestly had no idea. I just started one time when I had trouble with some adware and stopped by here. You guys were so helpful and friendly that I thought folding was the least I could do to say thanks.

My computer is almost always running, so I guess I've been folding all this time! Glad I could help out!
