Doing some self-help over past couple of days, have this to share:
1. On my other computer, that you folks helped fix, after a lengthy AVG anti-virus scan, the computer has never worked again...just gives a short, then three short beeps. Nothing else...BIOS battery is good, computer dead.
2. this computer. after being used by grad students to surf using IE, I get pop-up warning, telling me to get one of the following;
a. winanlt.virus
b. virusrescue
c. spyheal
It claims I am infected w/ spyware.cyberlog-x. And trojanspm/lx.
I have used AVG-anti-spyware and cannot delete:
adware.intcodec, and also had trouble with adware generic and adware virusburst.
I have gone to C:documents and settings and found in the Program files a folder called powercodec with two files, pmmon and pmsngr that I cannot delete. I have changed permissions , but still cannot delete these two files. I suspect they are part of the spyware/trojan that has infected my computer.
Any thoughts, please...?
Thank you,
Krome...
Sorry I lost the rest of your name...the other computer with that info died.
I think the problem with this computer is in a folder in the Program Files called "PowerCodec."
I tried everything to get rid of it, but access is denied. Even went to command prompt and tried to delete it there, but "access denied." Used all the resident anti-virus and spyware, too...

Locate HijackThis and rename it to HJT. Once it has been renamed, please post a new log.
Uh, I DID rename highjackthis to HJT, but it sure doesn't look like it...(Hey, ya gotta remember you're dealing with the seriously brain-deprived here.)
Well, here's the logfile...and oh, yes...I did remove ("check") some BHO files early on. Saw that "fix" in an earlier post and assist.

Yeah, and that damned PowerCodec is still there...
Is that the nidus of my problem?
Thanks for taking the time to respond...I do appreciate it!

Good to hear from you! Here's the ironic part...right after you got my skinny old butt straightened out, I did an AVG virus scan on that computer and it died...hard drive just spinning away, scanning going on, but it didn't stop for about two hours. So, I interrupted the scan, and tried to restart. One beep, then three beeps...and nothing. hasn't run since. CMOS battery OK, computer just dead. tried other hard drives, nothing. Just the beeps...Oh well...
Couple of grad students came by the other day, used IE on THIS computer, and I now have a real pain in the butt pop-up.
Trog asked me to "rename" Highjackthis to HJT, which I THOUGHT I did...but doesn't look like it took. Guess I'll just look through the old thread and start over and try to give Trog a hand as we wander through this one.
Good to hear from you...uh, how does one do a "pm"? The Wicked Witch of the West (my resident lady) says "Hello."
Got snow yet?

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

At this point, I have not seen the vile pop-up, but I have not gone to the net, in surfer style. Do you suggest I give it a test?
If I do wander afar again, and the aggravation is indeed gone, let me hereby express my sincere thanks. Any way I can reciprocate your courtesy? I am reluctant to volunteer for any sort of on-line help as I have serious reservations about my competence. But, if you, and Money 3457 think I can be modestly useful, just let me know. You have my email address, just zing me a note and we can discuss it in a less public forum.
Again, my sincere thanks...incidentally, when my lady asked me about Rugby, I told her it was a game played by men with odd shaped balls.
Cheers!
Kromedome...
Remove the following entries with HijackThis, and you should be all set:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
Surf around like normal, and if your not having any other problems, we can call this resolved.
Followed last instructions...thank you.
You seem to have cured the patient, for which we are most grateful. It is a singular talent you chaps have developed, and those of us who still wander around in the dark stand much in awe. But, we live in a world inhabited by creatures of a lesser nature, and I expect that sooner or later I shall come knocking at your door. Hope you're still around...
Thanks again.
Kromedome
My early morning AVG scan turned up the following. (The scan goes on as we speak, on the other computer)
Trojan horse Downloader.zlob.eow
There are five files so far, of the following same format;
backup.20061023-1, Troj h dldr.zlo
Path
c;\program files\Highjackthis\backups\backup-20061023-153909-655.DLL
obviously, I am midly befuddled about why Highjachthis might be implicated in facilitating a trojan horse downloader.
Ideas?
Remedies?
Steps to take/
The scan on the affected computer is not over, and i will do nothing 'til I hear from you.
Thanks, and sorry to be back bothering you.
By the way, portions of this message were to have been in red, but I see from the preview it didn't take...obviously my iineptitude...sorry
Krome
AVG finished the scan while I was BS'ing with you over here and deleted the five "threats."
Question is, should i uninstall/remove HijackThis from my computer, and just download when necessary? Is this a novel misuse of HJT, or have you seen it in the past?
Hope YOUR day goes well...and thanks.
Krome
I hope that answers your question. If not, please let me know.
Yes, answers my question fully. AVG deleted those files, so there was no decision required on my part.
I will just uninstall HighJackThis for the moment...if I pick up another infection, it's easily enough downloaded. Thanks for your help, and I'll hoist a glass of Nut Brown Ale to the good health of Manchester United!
Cheers,
Krome
I'll mark this resolved. If you need anymore help, you can PM me!
