It seems that most of the upcoming games and a few games on the market already are going to need the new DirectX 9.0C update. Most of these games have the update already built into the installer but the online demo’s lack the needed update..
The games with issues in question the IP-logging spyware-burdened Battlefield 2142 and the latest and greatest from the adventure genre - Broken Sword: The Angel of Death, both of which are solvable in only a couple of minutes.
Make sure to download the newest DirectX version form Microsoft here.

I thought 9.0C had been around for a while?

It has, but there have been several versions of DLLs since release which have been released in dated sub-packages of the 9.0C umbrella. They are primarily small bug fixes, but nevertheless important for some games.

This is why some games forces you to install it, even if you know you already have it. Piss me off sometimes. Especially when it forces you to reboot. I hate reboots over anything.
