Spyware and virus infection[resolved]

edited November 2006 in Spyware & Virus Removal
hi,

i am pretty sure my computer has spyware and virus's on it. I am constantly getting a ballon pop up from my task bar telling me im at risk and i need to get spyware protection, my browser is constantly redirected to spyware sites selling their products and my computer is very slow. I have followed all of the instructions for posting a new thread. I have ran all of the scans and posted the logs. After running spybot (this took several hours to complete which is very unual) it found several problems and was able to fix all but one which was called coolwwwsearch.smartsearch. I t said this was in use and i had to try again after rebooting. i tried but no luck. I also was not able to save the first scan logs from the karspensky and bitdefender scans as my computer was low on virtual memory by the time the scan was done and it just froze. after trying several times i was able to complete the scans and save the logs. I have also posted the HJT log. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

Hi there, I posted a thread a few days ago titled "Spyware and virus infection " but i have not recieved a reply. I know the volunteers are probably very busy but in the how to thread section it mentioned that if your thread went unanswered for 3 days you should mention it as it may have slipped by unoticed. I think it may have gone unoticed because i had to use several posts to post my scan logs as they did not fit in one and therefoee it may have looked like i had recived some replies already. Anyways im a pretty patient person and am not in a rush i just thought that it may have gone unoticed. Thanks for any help in advance.

Hi New Day, sorry you havn't received a reply in your original thread. If you post a new HijackThis log here, I'll be happy to have a look at it. Also, please tell me what problems you are having. :)

Hi there and thank you for your reply.

My problem consists of a ballon popping up from the task bar every 30 seconds and telling me that my system is infected, I am not protected etc... and that I need to click the ballon after which I am taken to some site selling spyware protection. My browser is also continuesly redirected to antispyweb.net or anew windows will just open to that site. I have had a lot of trouble running scans as well the are either extremely slow or freeze in the middle. After running spybot several times and having selected fix problems The problems keep showing up in the scans again. The computer is extremely slow as well.

Here is a new HJT log:

    Thanks for your help!

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
    http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

New Day, I just realised that you have Windows XP with NO service packs.

Before I continue to help you, I need you to download and install Service Pack 1a. With out this update, you will get infected as soon as we finish the cleanup becuase your is seriously unprotected.

Download and install Service Pack 1a from here >> http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx
Apply the update, reboot your computer, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

I'm sorry then, I cannot help you. Its against Forum policy and I feel its ethically wrong. :(

If you get a legit copy of Windows, I would be more than happy to help fix your computer.

Ho Trojan, I understand your concern.

I went ahead and ordered a windows genuine advantage kit from the microsoft site. I think they are supposed to send me an email as to how i am supposed to set up the new version of windows. They have given me a new product key but im not sure what im supposed to do with it. I will post back when i have it set up and have downloaded sp1. I would appriciate any help then with cleaning my system.

    thanks

Hi New Day, i'm glad your getting Windows validated. Once you have everything setup, I'll be more than happy to help you.

While your computer is infected, please DO NOT get Service Pack 2. Doing so, may render your computer useless. Only download and install Service Pack 1a as instructed.

    Thanks! :)

    Hi Trojan

So I got the windows genuine advantage kit and as you instructed I went to the microsoft site to download SP1a. According to their instructions SP1a should've been one of the listed updates that I needed to download. I tried several times but it was never listed. I called microsoft and they said that SP1 and SP2 were both included in the genuine advatage kit i purchased. I am a little bit confused now as you said I sholdnt download SP2. Does this mean my computer in messed up now? :( Anyways here is a new HJT log, I would appriciate any help. I have also run spybot several times and selected the fix option but all the problems keep showinf up on the next scan. Bitdefender found many virus's as well but wasnt able to fix them. Let me know if you want me to name the problems sbybot found and if I should post a log from bitdefender. Agian, I really appriciate all of your assistance.

Oh also, I didnt install any of the updates from microsofts site. Should i do this? or wait till my computer is clean?

    Thanks

You have Norton AntiVirus 2003 on the computer. Is it active and receiving regular updates? Please let me know, thanks! :)
  • edited November 2006
well, norton antivirus is always on but i dont have a subscription and therefore im not getting any updates. Ive been wanting to uninstall it and use the free AVG antivirus from the internet. Is that a good idea?
  • TroganTrogan London, UK
    edited November 2006
    Yes, we'll do that now.

First, download AVG anti-virus Free Edition to your desktop, but DO NOT install it yet.

Next, go into Add/Remove programs and remove the following Norton programs:

    LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
    LiveUpdate 1.80 (Symantec Corporation)
    Norton AntiVirus 2003

Reboot your computer, and install AVG.

Post a new HijackThis log after.

    Hi Trogan,

So I performed the uninstalls and installed AVG. I didnt run a scan yet but I got an alert for a virus. I selected move to vault but I got a warning that C:\windows\system32\msmapi32.exe is a system file and that it may cause the operating system to become unusable and so I just selected ignore.

here is the HJT log as well

    Thx :)

That file is bad. Lets clean out the infections and see whats left.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

    Under Main select the following:
      Windows Temp
      Current User Temp
      All Users Temp
      Temporary Internet Files
      Prefetch
      Java Cache

      *The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

      If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

So far, so good! Next step...

      Open HijackThis
      - Click the Do a system scan only button
      - Check the following entries (below)

      O20 - AppInit_DLLs: testcfgdll.dll

      - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
      - Click Fix Checked
      Close HiajckThis

Run HijackThis again and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
Click on Delete a file on reboot...
Copy and paste the following into the "File name:" text box and then click Open:

      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\testcfgdll.dll

When you are asked "Do you want to restart your computer now?", click OK.

Your PC MUST reboot to delete the file!

Once rebooted, please do an online scan with Panda ActiveScan

      - Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
      - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
      - Enter your Country
      - Enter your State/Province
      - Enter your e-mail address and click send
      - Select either Home User or Company
      - Click the big Scan Now button
      - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
      - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
      - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
      - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log
